Book Flying Kiwis - New Zealanders in the Fleet Air Arm 1939 - 1945, by Christopher Rhodes, published 2004. ISBN 1 920892 01 X. For those interested, I have just managed to obtain a (brand new) copy of this book off the author, and he mentioned he did have some left for sale. So if you want one, you will need to get in quick. The book is A4 sized with 381 pages. I have not read it yet, but it looks very interesting. The cost of the book is AUD$30.00, with postage from Aussie being AUD$26.40, but you will need to confirm this with the author first.Contact details for the author are: Email - topher_rhodes@yahoo.com.au (yes that is "topher") or, Snail Mail using his address: Christopher S Rhodes 51 O'Gradys Road 3764 Kilmore East Victoria AUSTRALIA I had to use both email and post when communicating with Christopher. I did ask if he would be fine with me advertising his book, and he had no problems.

Thanks, Sean, this looks like an interesting one. Haven't seen any mention of it before.
Big sucker of a book.

I emailed the author five days ago but have not received any response.
Anyone else had better luck?

Errol, I emailed him on the 16th (soon after posting) and nothing either. Sean mentions using snail mail as well as email so we might have to go that way.

Errol, I imagine you have heard from Chris as I just replied to his email of last night.
To get everyone a bit excited about this book, as alluded to on the back cover above, Chris is the son of Fleet Air Arm Corsair pilot HA 'Dusty' Rhodes DSC*, one of the great Kiwis in the RN and a legendary western Victoria veterinary post-war.

Hi All
Just received this from the author...
" Dear Sean, Thank you for keeping your word & placing my book on your website - the cover looks very impressive.
I have had a few inquiries & the total cost is now $A35-00 book + $A25-00 postage = $A 60-00. If you can place this price on your website I would be grateful. The actual postage has now gone to $A30-00 & I have added an extra $5-00 to the book to cover future rises - which I am sure will come! If you search on the internet under Howard "Dusty" Rhodes DSC* , [BVSc he was also a Vet who helped establish the Melbourne University Vet School] you will find some references , including an obituary, about him. He was a distant relative of one of your MP's Sir Heaton Rhodes. You will find his family tree in a book called "Rhodes of the Levels". Cheers Chris Rhodes "

How would he like payment?

How would he like payment? In correspondence with me Chris said cash, cheque or money order. I don't think money orders are sold any more. A cheque through the bank (for those who don't have an Aussie account) costs an arm and a leg these days. For these sort of amounts I just send AU$ in cash. Not lost anything yet, and even if I should at some stage it'll still work out cheaper than alternative fee-paying methods. Errol

Chris has asked me to advise the costings for those who live in Aussie:
I forgot about the reach of your website & a number of inquiries have come in from Australia. Could you please advise that the postage within Australia is AU$12-50 so total is $47-50- this not so shattering. My apologies to your New Zealand brethren, but Aus Post seems to want to hammer them. I hope the read is more interesting than impressive. Cheers Chris Rhodes

My copy arrived yesterday. A quick flick through (hurry up next week when I'm freeeeeeeeeeeee) revealed a lot of FAA history, good memories from 'Dusty' Rhodes and what looks like many less known actions/activities. Lots of photos printed throughout. It is a large, solid paperback that would make an excellent companion to Flying Navy released a couple of years ago. For the price, it is a bargain but it has been kept at that price by not including a glossy photo section etc.

If AusPost is so expensive what about one of the courier companies. Mind you A$25.00 maybe right as it would depend on dimensions and weight of book. I've had some textbooks sent from overseas and that can be US$50.00 or more on occasion.

A4-size and just under an inch thick, ngatimozart. Don't think she's a kilo but wouldn't be far off.

Sorry Garry, all I have is the details provided above. The only thing I can suggest is to write to him as well.
