Hi there, I'm building a 1/24th Spitfire Vb and want to make it 'Southland II' from 485 Squadron - the earlier 1941 deployment. I'm trying to find out the Squadron codes and serial number for 'Southland II' that was shot down / crashed off the coast of France, or else any other complete set of codes and name from that period (preferably funded / named from the South Island). I have the book '485 Squadron', but I can't find a complete set of serials / codes / name for any South Island machine. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. I think the best book to look at for this would be Spitfire: the New Zealand Story by Gerald S. Morris, I am sure that all the presentation Spitfires' details are in there. Sadly I don't have a copy to hand but someone here will do.

Ask and ye shall receive.... I happen to have my father's copy of said tome to hand (I'm planning a build of Tim Wallis' TB863/FU-P at some point), and according to it, the 'Southland II' that wound up on the French beach in 1941 (31st October to be precise) was W3759, coded OU-O. Also according to the book, the aircraft carried a second inscription beneath the port windscreen, either 'F/Lt Stan Norris DFC', or 'INVERCARGILL'. Hope this is the info you are after

485Sqn, nice work and you've done a grand job. I personally would give the model a far more matt, flat coat as these aircraft were very matt in finish as can be seen in the photo of this aircraft after being shot down.
Unfortunately as well I've got some bad news, "Southland II" was W3579 and not W3759 (source pg 106, Morris "Spitfire the New Zealand Story".
Sorry to have to tell you this but I thought that you would rather know the correct serial.

Oh dear. Oh well, an easy fix and a matt finish coming up...

Tim, I'm sure the No. 485 Squadron Spitfires had that lovely glossy finish on a wet day. ;D

What a fab model. Anyone would be glad to have it in their display matt finish or not LOL.

Great work, 485squadron - and it's good to see another Spitfire with a Kiwi connection being commemorated.
