I thought it was 1973 when the Air America 727 did that 2 day visit. It did some quick trials on Agent Orange and was basically spraying off the end of the runway such was the rush. You can see the grass died within hours so the MOW guys had to quickly plants some extra foliage.
You can see the shrub in the foreground that was relocated for the occasion and the flowers still in their pots that were hastily put in place.
Unfortunately the aircraft came around again still spraying as the MOW workers were still preparing the ground.
It was a bit of a joke around Base about the effectiveness of holding your nose, and breath while being sprayed.
Those guys were all given a couple of pills by the Medics and seemed to cheer up ......

I was under the idea that it was the practise for an airshow at Timaru in 1994 by Mr John Cotton who got told that it was a too highly dangerous display so close to the crowd. Pretty sure this was it as upon landing etc, talked to the f/e afterwards who needed fresh underwear.

Beags, I thought you were on 40 in the early 90's.
From what I heard, it was the second (and subsequently last) practice for an airshow. The idea was to take off and bank around at low altitude.... trouble with this though was (and it cant be seen in these pics) is as he was climbing and banking, he was also "slipping" back towards the ground. Look closely at the starboard wing tip.... it was still slipping towards the ground and it was estimated that the tip was no more than 10-15 feet off the deck. A difficult enough manouver in a fighter let alone a B727 airliner.

Actually Bruce you are onto it. This aircraft returned to Vietnam but the B727 Agent Orange thing just didn't work. Sparrow has already pointed out that the spray pattern was eratic and also the aircraft was just not suited to low altitude work. I think they were hoping the speed combined with low altitude would minimise damage from small arms and SAM's. It may well have been the laundry bill got to be too large also.
Anyway the aircraft were converted and the very same tanks were used for Chemmix trials. Being covert aircraft they already had the necessary security in place. I think they may have operated out of northern Thailand until about 1974 sometime.

I'm sick to death of this chemtrail crap. Give it a rest please. It's not funny.
The actual incident (RNZAF Boeing during a practice display) was recorded a month or two afterwards in NZ Wings magazine, with similar/same photo. I have just been through my collection of Wings from 1992-94 and haven't found it. Perhaps it's in 1989 beags?
