Corsair Special Vol 3 RNZAF Colour Schemes
Post by steve on Nov 6, 2005, 6:13pm
Published in 1984 by Warren P Russell this volume has
183 pages of very detailed information and photographs devoted to the 424? corsairs that served with the RNZAF. Covering histories, construction no,lists, Serial lists, colour schemes and markings etc.
The book is more a reference manual however plenty of photos of island operations, crashes and pages of details of the varies RNZAF roundels and fin lashes and the different procedures involved in overpainting US markings etc. A great companion for "to young to die"

I fully concur.
It is indeed a fantastic book, especially for modellers and RNZAF historians.
For anyone looking for this, the full title is:
N.Z.P.A.F. * R.N.Z.A.F. AIRCRAFT COLOUR SCHEMES, MARKINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, HISTORIES
CORSAIR SPECIAL
ISBN 0 473 00278 7 (NEW ZEALAND AERO PRODUCTS PUBLICATIONS)
Volume 1 is also brilliant, covering Airtourer, Airtrainer, Bleriot XI, Strikemaster, Sioux, Oxford and Anson
The only huge shame is when the author/publisher Warren Russell rushed out Volume 3, he never bothered to continue and fill the gap, Volume 2.

Whatever happened to Warren P. Russell: has he put out any other books since?

He co-wrote one with Gerard Morris about Wanaka Warbirds. That was in the 1990's.
It's a huge shame that he never continued the series he started. It cannot be due to lack of sales, surely, because his books are highly sought after. The ladies in the Wigram Museum shop reckoned they sold like hot cakes when I got mine.

Yeah, it is a shame because those books are excellent, and I was certainly interested in buying any others that came out. The Corsair Special is one of my all time favourites, and is taking pride of place in my book collection.
Maybe I should get off my arse and write something like that one day instead of waiting for everyone else to do it!

Hi this is my first post, so forgive me if I have got the etiquette wrong...
I wrote to Warren P Russell in 2004 asking him about Vol 2, and he advised me that Vol 3 came out before Vol 2 due to some problems with his printer. Vol 2 is all set to print, but he has some personal issues he needs to fix before he starts publishing again. He mentioned then, that he maybe in a position to start publishing again towards the end of 2005, about now….
From the info I have (via www.aeroflight.co.uk), Vol 2 will cover Bell UH1, Blackburn Baffin, Boeing 727, Brewster Buffalo, Bristol Freighter, Cessna 421, however this is not confirmed.
What he did confirm is that he also has a Vol 4 ready to publish as well. Vol 4 is a Catalina special.
I think he may have a waiting list for people who want these books, as he mentioned to me that I would be put on one….
So maybe someone else can write to him to get an update, and then let everyone else know his current status.

Sean, that IS excellent news! You've done well to chase that up. I will be keeping an eye open for both those books.
Hey, welcome to the forum too, mate.

Sean, THANK YOU for this great update. Welcome to the forum and don't worry about etiquette, we're all pretty relaxed and friendly around these parts.
This is really good to get this confirmed from another source. My father told me last year he'd heard the same thing. Dad ran a model company and was keen himself to secure the books as he (and I) had No's 1 and 3. Dad got some sort of press release or something about the intention to resume printing them. Sadly Dad got very ill with cancer and died in July so I never followed it up and haven't a clue if he kept the paper work. So hearing this from another source, a direct one too, is great. I wish Mr Russell well in getting his books out. I particularly want to see the Baffin section which should have been in Vol. 1 going alphabetically, before Bleriot. It may have been an issue of space in the book. The Catalina special will also be wonderful.
I will try to contact Warren Russell in the near future.

To be honest Sean, I'd clean forgotten about it. Now that you've reminded me, I'll get something done.
