Probably the only appropriate place to put these pix.... Summer 1987/88 Birdman Challenge - Lyttleton Harbour - NZ6210 Skyhawk What a fun day this was with all manner of flying (?) craft. This one however took the prize... not for the furthest flight, but for the amount of work that went into it. ...... and yes before anyone says it... the roundels are front to back.

Now that is bloody awesome! Those photos should have been in Don's book, haha.
Which section/base made this masterpiece?

Hi Don... I was stationed at Wigram during that time and didnt hear or see it being built on Base.... however thats not to say that it wasnt. Bill Drayton Cartage Contractors is a Hornby-based company, so that maybe a clue.
I was enjoying the weekend off and tripped over the hill to Lyttleton to watch the Birdman Challenge and it was a surprise to me to see the Skyhawk there.... unfortunately I only had B&W film in the camera at the time (was going through an experimental phase in my photography).
Glad I could bring something new to you.

That must have taken a hell of a lot of effort and time to build. Not to mention the material involved. Was there someone inside it when it went off the wharf? I note the canopy is open in the last shot, and I seem to recall people usually were inside the contraptions they tried to fly in these competitions.
No doubt the anti pollution bridge and health and safety would mean such fun events never happen any more?

Yep.. there was certainly someone "piloting" the craft.... one of the conditions of the challenge was that it had to have a "pilot".
