First time I noticed one fitted was around 2000, so its been a while. At that time there was only one pod and it was on loan from the USN.

I saw this and took a photo of it on the Orion on jacks in the hangar at Whenuapai the other week end . An RNZAF guy said it was better at picking up small boats than the other radar fitted to the Orion .

Actually its not a Radar - it's a passive receiver -- where it may have an advantage over the main radar (APS-134 from the Rigel fit on the pre K2 models) is the the ALQ-78 will pick up radar transmissions from the target boat, thus giving a bearing within 1 or 2 degrees.
More surprised that the initial pod was loaned by the USN -- obviously things have improved since I left the RNZAF
Now all we need is some one to "give" us some of the initial block 1 harpoons, we have ALQ-78 to provide the targeting info :-)
