Fantastic shots Sam! It seems the RAAF is keeping up its practice of mixing up the Hornet squadron's markings, 75, 3 and 77 represented in your shots.
By the way isn't Wanaka much more mountainous than Ohakea? I assume this will impact on the display to some extent.

Brilliant photos Sam. If I had still been living up there I would have joined you on the fence for the day!
Yes the terrain around Wanaka isn't like Ohakea's but shouldn't affect their display. The main display line down the runway is clear of terrain (the airfield actually sits up on a terrace which allows aircraft to sneek up on it from below!).

Thanks all, although I have noticed looking at work that the brightness levels on a couple of shots aren't quite the way I thought they were. Maybe my home monitor is a bit dark. Fantastic shots Sam! I assume this will impact on the display to some extent. There is a 2 OCU T-bird here as well. I had the same thoughts about the terrain. There were a couple of run-in angles employed during the attack simulation that I am not sure would work at Wanaka the way they do at Ohakea. It would be interesting to compare the display at the two locations and see if anything is different.

Yeah, no worries - it's a pleasure! ;D
It'd be interesting to know if these appearances in NZ help the RAAF with recruiting at all?

Well for me the RNZAF A4's punched above their weight on the Aus airshow circuit in years gone by particularly with 2 sqn at Nowra. These guys even appeared at shows without a RAAF presence. One that comes to mind is a show at Bankstown GA airfield where the A4's did a mock airfield attack. I'm not sure as to the detail on the nowra agreement and which taxpayers paid what for whatever but was good anyway. ;D

Awesome shots sam and NZav8a. Sam, I cant believe how close you can get on that fence when they taxi past, you don't often get that sort of access in Aussie bases. Any more from that spot?

Yup, and entirely legal too! Thanks again, and since you asked... A21-3 A21-12 A21-35 A21-20 Lead pair holding at the end of runway 27. Formation holding immediately prior to take-off.

Thanks Sam - perfect. I'm a little confused as to what the dual is doing there. Could be just a backup or may be taking some RNZAFers for rides? and a21-20 looks a slightly different colour but she has been a bit of a trial ship for different shades - at one stage was a very dark gunship grey.

Maybe if Gavin Conroy is reading this he could ask the Aussies nicely or put the word out so that he gets a ride in the back seat with his camera and can take some pics for us during the display? ;-)

Superb photos! I like the way the classic Hornets are weathered and faded compared to the nice new Supers that passed through last week. It adds interest and character.

He is quite right though Craig , here it is at an Ohakea open day in March 1993 in the dark grey scheme:

I think the nerdiest thing I've ever done (at least as far as recording aircraft data was concerned!), was when I was about 12 years old I filled out a small notebook with the histories, technical details and serials of each type of aircraft in RNZAF service at that time.
I was surprised when I ran into a bloke at the FAA air show at Nowra in 2008, and he was actually noting down the regos of all the aircraft there in a little black book! He was probably on the Chinese Govt payroll! ;D
