Don't know how I have missed this thread, but have only just noticed it tonight.
Looking very nice indeed.

Can never have too many RNZAF P-40s, and to see someone go to extra lengths to get it looking so good is fantastic. Keep up the great work, Keith!

Thats looking really nice. Look forward to the end result. Do you have a particular P40 in mind to represent?

This build stalled for a while due to a number of reasons but I want to get it completed by the end of the year so... Out with the masking tape and the airbrush. Some white stripes:

Thats a very smart looking build & I like the way you did the short to long tail thing, that would be doable in any scale. I'll be looking out for the rest . Whose & what colours have you used on this? Steve.

Whose & what colours have you used on this? Steve. The top surfaces are done in Gunze colours, RAF Dark Green and Dark Earth. I used Tamiya XF-23 Light blue underneath and XF-71 on the insides. Tamiya XF-2 (Flat white) gives much better coverage than the semigloss but it's tricky to get right. If you thin it to much, it's too translucent and tends to dry in the nozzle. If you don't thin it enough, you've got to open the apeture on the nozzle further to avoid blocking it, which also causes splatter and overspray. All good fun. Other than that, I find the acrylics really easy to use. Touch ups are now done. I'll wait for it to harden a bit and then add a gloss coat.

I have begun applying some ancient decals: The yellow circle was tricky.

Turns out, the ID stripe on the cowl is in the wrong place (Cheers Hasegawa) So I painted it out, remasked... and painted them in the right place. Incidentally, if your are doing RNZAF P-40 "Gloria Lyons", the Hasegawa painting and decal guide is correct.

A little minor progress... I've managed to complete the decalling and start attaching all the fiddly bits. The 9 on the nose used to be an 8. The great thing about decals is their flexibility. Serials are from Ventura and I used the the kit data stencils. I had a note from Brad Hagen (AKA P-40) that there should also be placards on the fronts of the oleos, so I'm going to paint those: I used a PE Gunsight from Toms Modelworks and painted the Mastercasters Fishtail exhausts grey (for now)

Thanks folks. Here's a little up-date as I start to "add" weathering. I'm starting off with a dusting of white to simulate fading and a few subtle paint chips: Oil, dust and soot are next.

Minimal update tonight. Brakelines, weathering, gunsights and tyres. After putting it off for over a year, I finally went to the model shop and bought some "not quite black" Gunze acrylic. I've spent the last few days painting every tyre I can lay my hands on. The ones on the P-40 were by far the easiest as they are made up of 4 pieces, which means... no masking. (Yay) Sliding Canopy framing is hand painted. I know it's wrong but that's just the way I like to do it.
