I stand corrected.
I can say that was a witness to the shower - as were most of Tengah - from a distance. This is post an Exercise in Malaysia.

I stand corrected again!! What I do know is that this was reasonably common at Tengah - I saw it two or three times as a kid and we used to laugh our heads off. Then naff off and play in the monsoon drains chasing snakes. I would like to humbly apologise for the misleading information. It came with Dad's Singapore stuff and due to its nature I dint think it was a common shot. I am well off the eight ball on this.,and as above defer to those with better knowledge, after all I was only 10 at the time!

Whatever is posted anywhere, you can bet your boots someone will come alng and say "I was there". To be honest, I was wondering how anyone could have seen that incident from Tengah, when it was taken up in Malaysia! Your dad's name?

VERY interesting photos and in great colour too. I love the various Bristol close formation shots - quite unique. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Any Skyhawk stuff in your Dad's collection Hawkeye?

Ahhhhhhh Bristol Freighter photos and lots of them. Should keep me happy for a while. ;D I wonder what all the Harvards were doing away from home? An exercise? Wise Owl? (Or whatever it was called back then?) Nice shot of NZ1092 now flying as ZK-WAR in a US colour scheme.

That last photo of the selection was taken outside the MAD shack at Whenuapai, were the Magnetic Anaomoly Detector from the Orion tail sting was serviced - I spent a fair while working out there with the likes of Dave Pellet and Barry Blackall. The guy standing closest to the door is Gavin Fairweather, not sure of the other, but will check some photos later and see if I can put a name to him. The MAD shack sat off the side of the northern end of the runways at Whenuapai, and was a good place to watch the aircraft come and go. Pity was in those days I had a crap camera, so photos tend to be specks of aircraft. I'm about to start going through my photos and slides and doing a "photos from my stash" series, so will hopefully be able to improve some of them as I scan them in.
I also suspect the first and fourth on page 2 are from the last NZ B170 flights and would be 5903 and 07 if I recall correctly. Looks like a back view of Brian Holmes and ?Wright.

I just remembered! I joined the mob in 1962 (BES19) and there was Colin Simmons amongst us. He re-mustered to aircrew, probably about 1963 and was flying B170's. I encountered him only once after Woodbourne, that being at Ohakea in '63 or '64 when he was piloting through. Does anybody know what happened to Colin Simmons?

Wow that was quite a clip. I wonder if a flight from what looks like Lake Wakatipu to Whenuapai is within the single engine range of the B170 though. ;D

Hey Caromeg, Would love to see the "porno" photo, I can recall 41 Sqn members "showering" on the first day of an exercise up im Malaya approx 74, Water etc hadnt yet been laid on and showers were definitely on the agenda I suggested that we get the local fire crew down to assist. The exercise was a particularily good one with many anecdotes coming from it.

I recall that movie being (partly) filmed at WP in 87 or 88, with lots of RNZAF extras. Most impressive part was the for-real dead stick landing my the American (as I recall) test pilot in the Freighter.

Just looking through this post as a suitable place for some more Freighter piccies. I'm intrigued by the last photo (bottom left) in caromeg's post - it shows Gavin Fairweather and another Insty whose name I can't recall outside the MAD shack at Whenuapai. However, to refresh the thread here is a great shot of NZ5911 over Changi (RNZAF): Freighter NZ5911 41 sqdn over Changi by Les Billcliff, on Flickr
