Zac, where did you find that information? Please post a link.
It's really interesting. Back in the 1950's a move was also made by Leslie Hunt, an aircraft historian and former Intelligence Officer of No. 488 (NZ) Squadron, to get a Hurricane from Britain, then being retired and scrapped, for New Zealand too. This was also rejected in the end. It wasn't till the 1960's that NZ finally got a Spitfire and then a Lancaster. Imagine if a Hurricane and a Mosquito had both been preserved here at Auckland War Memorial Museum or a similar place.
I would like to know more about this MP, Mr. Hayman. I wonder if he was ex-RNZAF?

I have a feeling the extract printed here is is a copy of something that I wrote many years ago, and had it published somewhere. Mr Hayman lived at Oamaru, and was the local MP (Waitaki?) He had a copy of the IPB for the Merlin 25, now (I think!) at the RNZAF Museum. David D

Ah right, now I realise this is the Mr. T. Hayman who was the cousin to Jim Clarke, as in reply #17 from Denys.

Ok Dave, Hayman features further back in this thread in denysjones post (Post no 17). "Six of these supposedly went to Cliff Horrell of Ashburton and two went to Mr T Hayman from Studholme Junction and J Clarke of Oamaru. Clarke was Hayman's cousin and Hayman was the local MP and so got them a dispensation in respect of the 50mile rail freight limit so they could road their aircraft south." I did a quick web search an Thomas Hayman was a National Party MP first for Oamaru from1949 -57 then Waitaki 1957 - 62 when he died as Minister of Agriculture (Wikipedia).

That's precisely the one :-) Apparently the original source was Brendon Deere's old website.
