I think you will find that the leap from Sioux to NH90 was considered too huge.

I've flown in a civilian Bell 47 and loved it but this would be like learning to drive in a Ferrari... challenging but rewarding when you get it right. That is/was my concern also....the Sioux, while definitely past its use by date, seemed like a very good introduction to rotary flight- Good visibility, basic systems and minimal power which would teach good engine/power management. The 109 is a proven airframe but it is (relatively) complex one- Two turbines, retractable gear etc. I guess that is part of the reason for the purchase of the simulator for the A109, all the system stuff can be thrashed out in there without consuming expensive flying hours, so that by the time a pupil gets into the actual aircraft they are very familar with the way everything interfaces and they can concentrate on the flying side of things.

But that still leaves a gap where the student needs to be taught basic handling techniques. I think Dave's suggestion that prospective rotary pilots get some initial hours in civilian trainers prior to A109 conversion is the way they will go.

Awesome photos Shawn...looks great. For all you guys our TET (Taranaki Electricity Trust) AW119 Koala Rescue helicopter has been replaced with a A109 Power which is due here this month and I beleive it has skids. If you want to check out the yellow and black colour scheme go to:www.trht.org.nz I know when we got the A119 the pilots said about the extra power the machine had and it took a bit of getting the hang of because things happened a hell of a lot faster. I guess thats why an advanced trainer such as a PC-9 may well be on the cards sometime in the future years to help bridge the gap from the CT-4E. Awesome pics.

Nice. Anyone know when these are meant to start arriving? And the NH-90s for that matter? The latter were originally announced to start arriving by 2010... just impatient I guess

Nice - my new desktop background as of today. Glad to see the RNZAF getting some new kit and 3 Sqn in particular who have done sterling work with the Sioux and Iroquois over the years.

they would look even better with gun pod's and hellfire's attached Absolutely!!!!!!! Without those it looks like the sort of helicopter that would be picked on at school, it's shirt would be tucked in and it's pants pulled up too high and too tight, all whilst wearing walking sockes and sandles.... ;D
