A new thread for the actual show, and not ten pages of anticipation! Friday April 2nd, practice day. The weather held, although the clouds varied somewhat, as did the temperature. Crowd was small-ish, all things considered. This morning we got the nice bonus of the LC-130 ski-equipped Herc arriving and doing a couple of passes. Zero display! Jurgis Kairys (with pyro!) Wingwalking The La-9 didn't get away with the YaK-3 and L-39, managed it when everyone was packing up (thanks to Zac for giving me a text heads-up while I was over at the Warhorses). A few more photos at Flickr.

Nice shots Errol , thanks ( I assume the pic of Jurgis , with pyros in the background was just a coincidence ) ? Looking forward to shots of the " main event " !:-)

Was anyone at Wanaka today? I saw a nice clip on the news of the Spitfire chasing the Zero. Awesome to see that. Most people won't know the Spitfire took the Zero on in battle I guess.

Most people won't know the Spitfire took the Zero on in battle I guess. commentators had this well covered, Jim H's dad flew PR spits over Burma. Had 35kt crosswinds from 1430 or so, no big 'attack' by Harvards etc. Otherwise basically as planned. F-18 4 ship was tight, although display is what you would expect from squadron pilots. Great show, I'm making the most of Zeke and La-9 while I can. Have an even better shot of the Yukka and pyro. Farewell from the carpark queue.

Did they have that dick Hickey commentating at WOW? What an Oxygen thief. Listening to his inane prattle was the worst part of the Masterton airshow last year. He added almost nothing to the show, and seemed to talk constantly just so he could listen to the sound of his own voice. It was embarrassing listening to his sexist drivel about the female pilots.

So, it is quarter past nine on the evening on the Sunday of a Wanaka airshow, and all the forum contingent who have not been able to go to the show have seen is just one forum post of photos. Good as they are, I'm sure I'm not the only one suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Can we please see some more? Pleeaasse?

Yeah, in the absence of any other evidence, I suggest that there wasn't really an air show at all, just some enormous womanising, drinking debauchery with a cover story to make it seem acceptable

Good to see the ski herk back. F18s would have been bloody good as well. I wonder if this is the last we will see of the UH1 in RNZAF service? I understand there was no World War 1 stuff there this time? Shame the Huricane was not flying as well

With the expected retirement date for the Huey looking like 2014, you should see them a few more times yet, although the next WOW may see the NH90 being shown off.

Great reporting there by The Press - I didn't know the F/A-18B required a co-pilot, but it was lucky that Big Head McCaw was free for the day, wasn't it..... And, I think the RAAF pilot's name might actually be Sqdn Ldr Adam Loong.
