Hi from a newbie
I would like to model Grumman Goose ZK-DFC in Mt Cook Airlines colours, but am having trouble finding pictures. There are some of those flight sim things online, but I do not know how accurate they are. Can anyone point me in the right direction please, either to books or online sources? Many thanks.

“The Aircraft of Air New Zealand and affiliates since 1940” by Paul Sheehan (TransPress NZ, published 2003) has a colour photo on page 148 showing a port-side view of G21A Goose ZK-DFC in Mount Cook colours taxiing down the ramp into the harbour at Mechanics Bay, Auckland in 1973. The photograph is credited to Mike Cornwall.

Most colour photos of ZK-DFC/2 show it in later Sea Bee or Surf colours. (ZK-DFC/1 was the Airspeed Ambassador). However, I do have some not-so-good b&w shots of this Goose in Mt Cook colours at Mechanics Bay 1976 that may help with the layout details.

I used to love that Cold Water Surf advert with ZK-DFC in it. It was a thrill to see the star itself at the Ardmore airshow in 1990.

We have a reasonably extensive photo gallery on the internal Mt Cook website. Will check tomorrow and see if any are there.

Somewhere (possibly in a box in the shed) I've got a Mount Cook Airlines brochure featuring their amphibian Grumman Widgeons and Grumman Goose complete with colour photographs, timetables (yep....they operated a scheduled timetable service to the Bay of Islands, as well as services around the Hauraki Gulf), charter information, general tourist information associated with Mount Cook's amphibian services, and other interesting stuff. If I remember correctly, I think it is about a 12-page booklet. There is a skiplane brochure with it and another brochure featuring their Fiordland services (including floatplanes), and a Mount Cook Airlines timetable for their trunk airline services.
It would be a bloody nightmare trying to locate them though. The last time I saw them was when my household was being packed up by professional packers in Gisborne back in 1998 prior to moving to Masterton. A lot of interesting archive stuff I had accumulated never got unpacked and is sitting in a stack of boxes in my shed.

Was this aircraft delivered as N19DF? If so I have colour shots.

Dave,
Happy to share. I seem to recall that the side view involved some "creative trespass" so I'm pleased it paid off eventually.
Regards Ron

I was very surprised that colour shots of DFC in Mt Cook livery were rare. Anyway I have got into gear and posted a couple. I hope they are useful

Poor shot but evocative bringing back memories for those of us who used to watch them and indeed fly in them from time to time.

It seems that the signwriting on the floats was short-lived. The red part appears to read "Beware of Propellers". This image is cropped and rotated from the rear view posted previously i.e. the float is retracted. Maybe helpful to the modellers. Rgds

Thanks for that Ron. I wonder why they deleted that signwriting. Perhaps the water rushing past made it untidy?

Here are some photos of Grumman Goose ZK-DFC in Sea Bee Air service, recently uploaded to the Auckland Library's Heritage Images site. They were taken by Rob Tucker and show the aircraft at Mechanics Bay in Auckland, and one of the islands, probably Waiheke Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-432 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-433 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-434 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-438 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-435 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-436 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-437 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-438 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-439 Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries 1423-440
