Gillard Ian Murray CBE AFC (X72287) Air Commodore. Passed away at Taupo Hospital 19 April 2019 aged 89. A service commemorating Ian's life will be held at The Founders Chapel of Remembrance 117 Rickit Street Taupo 1.00pm 27 April 2019. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : GILLARD, Air Commodore Ian Murray, CBE, AFC. X72287; Born Morrinsville, 20 Apr 1930; RNZAF 10 May 1948 to 28 Jan 1984; Pilot. Queen’s Honorary Aide-de-Camp (Additional) 3 Nov 1978 to 3 Nov 1980. Citation Air Force Cross (NY1963): Squadron Leader Gillard enlisted in the RNZAF in May 1948. He was appointed to a commission in January, 1951, and promoted to his present rank in April, 1962. He has completed 2,800 hours’ flying, 1,500 of which have been flown in high performance jet aircraft and 100 hours of which have been flown in the last six months. As commanding officer of the Bomber Operational Conversion Unit he has set and demanded very high standards and this is evidenced by the very high level of flying skill of trainees passing out from the unit. Exceptionally gifted as a leader and with flying skill of the highest order, he has at all times zealously applied his maximum effort to furthering the efficiency of flying training. Citation Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1977): Group Captain Gillard joined the RNZAF in 1948. He graduated as a pilot in 1950 and subsequently qualified as a flying instructor. He served in the strike role in units in New Zealand and overseas and filled with distinction staff posts in Canberra and Wellington. He is currently the commander of the RNZAF’s Support Group, an appointment he assumed after completing two years as the senior air staff officer in Defence Headquarters. Throughout his 28 years of service, Group Captain Gillard has shown outstanding loyalty and devotion to duty. In both command and staff posts, his strong sense of duty has been responsible for a personal effort far beyond the normal service demands. As a consequence, he has invariably exercised a most significant influence in the progress and greater effectiveness of the RNZAF and thus has been an inspiration to others. Group Captain Gillard’s outstanding qualities were demonstrated early in 1976 when he headed a team of specialist officers in the United Kingdom to negotiate the acquisition of Andover aircraft for the RNZAF. Due to his endeavours, negotiations proceeded efficiently and smoothly and have resulted in an arrangement with Her Majesty’s United Kingdom Government that is of benefit to all concerned. His personal contribution has undoubtedly led to a very large financial savings and enhanced the favourable image that New Zealand and New Zealand servicemen enjoy in the United Kingdom. Citation Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1981): Air Commodore Gillard joined the RNZAF in 1948. He has since held numerous flying appointments both as a strike role pilot and an instructor. In more recent years Air Commodore Gillard has filled senior command and staff appointments serving as Commanding Officer RNZAF Base Auckland, Commander RNZAF Support Group and since November 1978 in his present appointment as Deputy Chief of Air Staff. He has always discharged the full responsibilities of these demanding posts with exceptional application and competence to the great benefit of the Service. His absolute loyalty and dedication have at all times strengthened the hand of the Chiefs of Staff for whom he has worked. He has served as an Honorary Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General and is at present an Aide-de-Camp Additional to Her Majesty The Queen. Air Commodore Gillard is an outstanding member of the RNZAF, who has risen by his undeviating and selfless application to the interests of the Service from the ranks to hold the second highest appointment in the Air Force. Throughout his career the exceptional value of his contributions in each of the wide range of flying, staff and command appointments he has filled has been apparent. In more recent years he has filled a series of very senior and demanding appointments with distinction. Brother of Plt Off T A Gillard, below. CO 75 Sqn RNZAF (Canberra) Apr 1962. GILLARD, Pilot Officer Trevor Alexander, DFC.NZ411882; Born Otahuhu, 31 May 1922; RNZAF 23 Mar 1941 to 10 Apr 1945; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (19 May 1944): [450 Sqn RAAF (Kittyhawk)] This officer has completed a tour of operations in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. In January, 1944, he completed a very effective attack on enemy shipping in Sibenik harbour, obtaining hits on enemy vessels. Later in the same month he silenced German long-range guns though his aircraft sustained severe damage from the defences. He has at all times displayed a high quality of courage and devotion to duty. Brother of Air Cdre I M Gillard, above. Died Gisborne, 11 Nov 1988. Errol

Certainly a strange initial post Bondy. Normally you would be welcomed onboard but it is obvious you seem intent on reacting to comments you have seen here. While we appreciate you will be upset so soon after your great-grandads passing I also think you may not realise what is going on. Your comments could easily be taken as being nasty, they are certainly ill informed. I am sure Bondy had many memories of his war record and the family have every right to be proud. What became a distinct possibility of him serving during the Battle of Britain, in late 1940, was under discussion. Given his age and mention of the Base made that a possibility and he may have been one of the last to have served in that particular battle. What you have stated has no bearing on things there. Errol has a massive library at his fingertips and will have the facts. This is from the death notice; and this from Errol's research; If you read what Errol has said it was that Bondy had not joined up until after that particular battle. I was with the RNZAF in the UK and have been to Digby. I know the area pretty well and I can recall some of the stories. There is the one about the Base Commander, I think it was, who took off to intercept a roving night fighter only to close in and discover he hadn't armed his guns. These were all early in the war. The Base history has the station being used as a Mosquito airfield after 1942. It was a radio installation during my time but I have to admit the closest I got would have been the Red Lion on a Sunday afternoon. We were at Cranwell just a few miles to the South. No-one is saying he wasn't in England, served and got medals. His rank as recorded in the official documents is probably different during his wartime service at least. We are all sure he met his wife there. If you sit back and take a seat I am sure you will either be told more about his wartime service or will learn about how to receive them. It is great that you are showing an interest and rest assured the guys here will help fill in the gaps of his service. You may even have family memorabilia that you can show in a more appropriate thread here. Airmen would have had a succession of postings and moves during their service. The records will show a good many of them. Digby is just one airfield and he would have been based at many during his time. The same with Squadrons, he would have served with a number, not just the one. Out on 99 is a very good score. He had a good innings and I, for one, would like to hear more about him.

You are talking out of a hole in your head. He was there during the war. I have seen his medals. He also met his wife there. So yes kindly take a hike. Whilst you are clearly upset at the loss of what I can only imagine is your relative, Ian Bond, your approach with this aggressive post is not the best way to start out with your first and only post on this forum. Especially not on this thread that is all about respectively remembering our Air Force and aviation veterans and heroes who've passed away. Here we treat each other with respect and we debate rather than argue. You probably have no idea but Errol is one of the foremost historians and researchers of RNZAF history, he has a wealth of knowledge and resources at his fingertips, and as you'll see he has produced evidence from RNZAF Routine Orders dated 8th of April 1942 showing an Ian Stephen Balfour Bond, birth date 11/7/1917, as enlisting on the 27th of March 1942 in the trade classification of Aircraft Hand (General Duties). From 1941 onwards No. 46 Squadron RAF was operating in the Malta, Egypt and Cyprus areas, and were nowhere near RAF Digby. From January 1945 the squadron was back in England at RAF Stoney Cross, flying Stirlings for Transport Command, on a route to India and back. I believe somewhere along the way an error has crept in regarding Digby, but no-one is saying he was not a member of the squadron nor that he was not in England. If he was an aircrew trade he'd have had a Flying Logbook which would map out all his movements and bases. Perhaps if you can please offer information rather than anger, we may all learn something about Ian Bond.

Aww, Nona was a lovely lady. She wrote a great book called Memories of the RNZAF with her late husband Keith, and after I had read it I tracked her down and we had a really good chat on the phone. That was back in about 2006 or so. I did not realise she was still alive up till now.
