I have been approached by Mark Blyth trying to source a model of a Cessna 402 for the funeral of MARK NORRIE. Following is his message:
"Unfortunately one of our NZ pilot community Capt Mark Norrie (Air NZ 777 Captain as well as Bell ranger helicopter pilot) has passed away recently. His funeral is in Auckland on this Sunday 8th Sept(11am at Purewa – see below, if anyone knew him and want’s to attend) and I am attempting to put a display at the funeral chapel with models etc of all the aircraft he flew.
I have everything else however I am struggling with the Cessna 402 which he flew for Air Central in the late 70’s to early 80’s from what I know.
If you have any contacts who can help with anything that could be used as a small loan item for the funeral it is certainly extremely appreciated. I am thinking of:
A model of a Cessna 402 (ideally an Air Central livery) Any memorabilia etc of the Cessna 402 with Air Central on it. Photos of the Air Central 402’s (I do have option though on some sourced on the net and an original of the three 402’s that were with Air Central) Any parts that may be related to the A/C he flew (i.e. the two 402’s that we damaged beyond repair - one ran off the runway and one caught fire at Napier Airport both in Dec 1981)
Any assistance you are able to help with is certainly appreciated at this time. Cheers Mark. (Ph: 0226006956) "

From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : QUILL, Air Commodore Stanley Gilbert, CBE, DFC. NZ1059 & U70030; Born Porirua, 12 Oct 1919; RNZAF 4 Jan 1938 to 3 Jan 1975; Pilot. Hon Aide-de-Camp to HE the Governor-General 1 Apr 1950 to 31 Mar 1951. Queen’s Honorary Aide-de-Camp 19 Mar 1973 to 3 Jan 1975. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (18 Sep 1944): [14 Sqn RNZAF (Kittyhawk)] To such good purpose has this officer led his Squadron in operations against the enemy in the Solomons, that his unit has destroyed 23 Japanese aircraft, probably destroyed several more, and damaged others, with the loss of only three pilots in combat. Squadron Leader Quill, immediately after destroying a Zero, was wounded in a fierce action near Munda on his first tour of operations last July [1943], and although weak through loss of blood, he reached an allied base and made a brilliant landing, wheels-up. He has since led his Squadron through two further tours. With the withdrawal of enemy aircraft to more northerly bases in recent months, he has both assisted in organising, and has personally led dive-bombing raids by Warhawks against Rabaul and its surroundings, and has been a highly successful pioneer in the use of fighter-bomber aircraft for fire-raising raids on enemy installations. In all these operations he has displayed courage and determination. Squadron Leader Quill led his unit on 76 missions, covering almost the entire Solomons campaign, and by his personal example, quiet enthusiasm and active interest in all the personnel under his command, built up a Squadron that earned a particularly high reputation in the estimation of both New Zealand and Allied Commands.CO 14 Sqn May 1943-Apr 1944, flying three tours with the unit in the S & SWPAs between Apr 1943 and Mar 1944. United States Commendation: (Mar 1945) “The Commander Aircraft, Northern Solomons, takes pleasure in commending WING COMMANDER STANLEY GILBERT QUILL, ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE for services as set forth in the following CITATION: For skilful and effective performance of duty while serving as Assistant Operations Officer on the staff of Commander Aircraft Northern Solomons from November 1944 to 11 March 1945. Wing Commander Quill in this position used his broad knowledge and tactical experience to help in the origin and supervision of aerial strikes against the enemy in the Northern Solomons Area. His knowledge of air operations and his invaluable advice and suggestions were largely responsible for the excellent co-ordination and efficient operations of units under this command. The neutralisation of enemy air activity, the large destruction of enemy personnel and material and the excellent co-ordination with the Australian Army ground operations was a reflection on the precise planning and effective tactics originated by the Operations Section of the Commander Aircraft Northern Solomons. Wing Commander Quill at all times performed his duties with a degree of skill, energy, and enthusiasm in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.” [Sgd] R J Mitchell, Major General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commander Aircraft, Northern Solomons. Citation Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1954): Not available. Following his operational service with 14 Sqn Wg Cdr Quill served as OC Fighter Wing, Bougainville, OC Jacquinot Bay, Operations Officer Air Group HQ BCOF in Japan, Member of the Planning Executive RNZAF HQ, OC Research & Development Flight at Whenuapai, established and became the first OC RNZAF Officers School of Instruction, then OC Flying Wing Wigram. His distinguished service in these posts was recognised by the award of the OBE. Citation Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1969): Not available. I am saddened to read that Warrant Officer Terry Wereta has passed away. He was an absolute legend, the most fearsome and respected person I ever encountered in my time in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He had the loaudest voice. And the keenest eye. A direct descendant of Hone Heke, he used to tell us. I enjoyed when he used to visit my section to hide from the Base Commander, when he's tell war stories and keep me abreast of all the happenings on base. What a terrific man he was. RIP.
