As part of the NZALPA E-mail list, I received the following news today:
It is with deep regret that I send the sad news that Phil Murray passed away on Friday 28 December in Christchurch. Phil had been battling cancer for some time and finally lost his long struggle.
Phil started flying with the South Otago Aero Club in Balclutha back in the mid 1970's. His professional aviation career that followed was anything but typical. He initially operated in the GA ag flying sector then subsequently joined the RNZAF in 1984. His time in the service was spent on helicopters and in the training role. He was well regarded as an instructor who achieved and set the highest standards and as a respected member of the Red Checkers aerobatic team. After leaving the RNZAF Phil had a stint with Pacific Aerospace as a test pilot before ultimately joining Air New Zealand.
Phil will always be remembered as one of those guys who seem to live and breathe aviation. It was a passion that he never tired talking of or learning more about. With well over 100 aeroplane types to his log book he was widely known in New Zealand's small aviation community. He was also a valued member of NZALPA, joining our Association in 1996.
At Phil's request the family will hold a small funeral to remember his life. Phil was very appreciative of the support that so many people showed him at his 'farewell party' back in May. He wanted that occasion to be the one that friends remembered him by and was glad that he could say farewell in an appropriate and dignified setting.
Phil will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues in aviation and his loss is felt deeply. NZALPA sends our deepest sympathies to Christine and family. Our thoughts are with them as they mourn the loss of their husband, father and grandfather and one of our aviation friends.
Chris Mehlhopt NZALPA Medical & Welfare Director
As a keen young serviceman in the RNZAF at the time, I was aware of Phil's involvement in the Red Checkers team. As a Warbird enthusiast, I was also enjoyed watching Phil as a flying member at the height of the Alpine Fighter Collection.
As a husband, father, grandfather, serviceman, warbird and airline pilot - he was able to put a tick in many of the big boxes.
Cheers

Oh no!! I am shocked to see Phil's death. Only today I was looking through some of the Warbirds Over Wanaka books from the 1990's and saw several photos of him, and I was wondering what he was up to these days as he'd be a great candidate for an interview. I was actually going to ask on the forum. So this has come as a complete shock.
I knew Phil when we were both serving at Wigram. He was such a nice chap, and although he was a Flight Lieutenant instructor pilot and I was just a lowly S&S baggie he was always willing to stop for a chat about warbirds as he knew I was a huge fan of the things that Sir Tim Wallis was doing, and he of course flew the P-40K for the collection, among other things. He had lots of stories from his career, and always kept me up to date with what was happening in Warbirds. I had a huge amount of respect for him.
He was also a really terrific pilot. A real natural. His 'crazy' flying act in the Piper Cub was something that I'll never forget. And I watched him in the Red Checkers more times than I can remember.
Too many of the great pilots from those golden airshow days just 20 years ago are gone - Ray Hanna, Mark Hanna, Tom Middleton, and now Phil Murray. Unbelievable.
RIP Phil, and blue skies mate.

It appears that he then spent time at university before rejoining the RNZAF with a permanent commission, as an armament officer, on 1 Mar 49 (and now allotted service number 73501), as the gazette notice announcing this appointment features 'BSc' after his name.
