We seem to be losing two or three aviation people a day lately, Sadly I think living aviation people are heading toward the endangered species list.

Sad indeed Bruce. Had he flown during the war? Both WW2 and Korea, over 30 years in the USAAF / USAF. Only last week Aviation Week Magazine named him #4 in thier top 50 most influential aviation personalities. Might not be a widely recognised name, but amongst Sport aviators his contribution has been enormous.

Not an obituary, but I have been looking into the service of a NZer who flew in the ETO. He's my pastor's late uncle, William John Campbell, W.O. 422366, died 1987.
From conversation with John I learned his uncle possibly flew Hurricanes, so John recalls. Trentham are in the process of tracking down William Campbell's service details. Hopefully I can find out specific a/c and Sqn for a tribute build.
Regards
Ross

Albie Rountree was one of the many wartime members of the RNZAF who, after completing his elementary training in NZ was shipped off to Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme, in Janaury 1944, to complete his advanced training. He qualified there as a pilot in late September, returned to NZ Nov 1944, and after refresher courses and a fighter OTU course, served with 23 Sqdn on their last tour in the Pacific. David D

I knew Albie quite well when I was living in Cheviot, and he was the person that I restored the Tiger Moth model for. His son-in-law has a large collection of military vehicles and is one of the re-enactors that performs at Omaka.
RIP Albie, I miss our Anzac Day sessions.

That's sad, he was more importantly one of the few survivng combat pilots who'd flown the P-40 in action, and he'd also flown the Corsair in action. He rose to become the Flight Commander of No. 21 (Fighter) Squadron. He may well have been the last wartime fighter squadron Flight Commander. RIP.

Thanks for the comments - yes he loved going to Lake Ferry for white bait and flounders and then out the coast to the rough seas of Ngawi for other fish from a small dinghy. I really enjoyed the chat I had with him at his home the Friday night of WOW 2013, and he still recalled some wonderful detailed stories of some flights. He also corroborated about the technical details of the radar they had on board for enemy fighters, and also a Friend or Foe determinator system they used. He told of an 11hr flight they undertook to drop leaflets over Italy and return home again, of journeys deep into France and around the Alps to avoid detection by German radar... and he was only 22... I eagerly await my brother's humorous stories he undoubtedly has to tell of farming and fishing back home. Dad and Ian shared farming on three farms back in the 60's. I will add a photo shortly.
