And just when my friend was saying we didn't need an air force because NO ONE WOULD ATTACK US.

Who do you think you are kidding Mr. Bananarama? If you think we’re on the run... We are the boys who will stop your little game! We are the boys who will make you think again! 'Cause, who do you think you are kidding Mr. Bananarama If you think old New Zealand's done?

Good fighters...especially in the Bougainville campaign where one was awarded a posthumous VC.

A friend of mine was serving at Guadalcanal when the Fijians turned up there. The Fijian Commandoes had NZ Army officers by the way, and came under NZ command I believe. They either asked or were asked to do a night training exercise with the US Marines at their camp. Basically at 9pm in the dark the Fijian platoon were to attempt to infiltrate the US Marine camp and the Marines had to stop them. Come 9.30pm the Americans had still heard nothing and the camp commander thought the Fijians had forgotten so he rang the Fijians' commander and asked what time he intended to start. "We've already been there and come back." was the reply. "What?" "Yes, if you check the boots of all your sentries, and the wheels of all the vehicles in your camp you'll see chalked white crosses."
Sure enough, there were white crosses on the boots of every Marine sentry, and every vehicle. The Americans were gobsmacked and this was the push to get them up to the front lines. In fact they operated for weeks at a time on the Japanese side of the lines causing much mayhem and killing thousands of Japs. They really were the ultimate in elite forces.
They have proven their worth since in Malaya, Vietnam, the SAS etc too. Our troops might be good but messing with the Fijians is not a very good idea.

What a paranoid little banana republic Fiji has become.
While Fijian troops may well be very good soldiers, I think they are only as good as the officers that lead them - and if the current bunch of numb-nuts in Suva is anything to go by, I doubt that they are currently lead by anyone very competent.

The other thing is, isn't 2/3 of the Fijian Army off-shore on deployments elsewhere in the world?
Maybe the NZ Govt. can offer the services of HMNZS Canterbury to bring them home to Fiji for the upcoming battle? ;D

The Fijian Army . . . they are the best fighters in the world. A shame then that they won't prove it by kicking the arse of one Barmymarama! Errol

Don't ya just love the "Benign Strategic Environment" we all live in... And where oh where is H Clark and her beloved UN in all this?? The NZDF will be dusting off the end of exercise reports for all those similar scenario exercises we did for exactly this sort of thing in the late 1980s.

Dave is correct in his post of 2.18pm. I have done much study on that subject as a student of their command and weapons used at the time. As for Helen, I remember her words well, "We will never need air cover for our troops in the Pacific". Even "Peacemakers" need aircover ! She and her Mob should be put on trial ! Sorry about the rant, the fact that she got away with it just drives me mad !. Mike, Wellington.

What a mess this is-such a beautiful paradise(outer islands) to be brought into such a state by a complete nutter. Maybe the US could do what they did to Bin Laden and take this idiot out and then restore this island nation back to the paradise it rightfully is.

Comrade Clarke-ski is a rabid follower of the adage (extra rum ration to whomever knows the originator) "If you shout it loud enough and long enough people eventually believe you." Or, "Tell a big enough lie and they'll believe you."
As an aside, I wonder if the Ozmates would lend us a 'Vark or two . ..
Cheers

They'd probably be better off as a colony again. They obviously can't run themselves.
