That camouflage would be perfect in the Australian desert, wouldn't it?

The Captain of the IL-76 was an Illushin test pilot, I guess for the Airshow. But you are right Pacific Express did have kiwis aboard for their freight operations, mainly for interpreting and procedures, rather than actual flying I believe.

Ok here's a different one.... Michael Jackson's two Boeing 707 aircraft that brought him and his gear out to Auckland for his only concert here in NZ in Nov 1996. The two aircraft were parked at Whenuapai for the duration of his stay and we were fortunate enough to get a look inside his private VIP jet. One of the aircraft crew chiefs showed us around inside but got a bit stressed when we found both the 'glove' and the monkey....! ;D His bedroom was a separate self contained booth in the middle of the aircraft . I recall both 5 Sqn and the 'Aircraft Wash Rack' crew made a heap of money for their social club by washing the aircraft during their layover . Crew chief also mentioned that when MJ used to visit the flight deck for a chat, as he leaned forward and was in front of one of the side windows, when looking across you could see right through the end of his nose, it was quite translucent from all the plastic surgery he had done on it....! Weird . The small girl in the photo is my daughter at 2 1/2 years, and as you can see she didn't want to be there at all..! MJ was a scary man i.e. Thriller, Zombies etc... Bad Father making her stand in front of his jet just for the photo op. The two aircraft in Amsterdam - (Photo - Freek Blokzijl - Jetphotos). First photo of this 707 of JARO's YR-JCB, when she was chartered to Kingdom Entertainment Group, for Michael Jackson's 1996 European Tour! First visit in Amsterdam therefore. In the background Boeing 707 N138SR, which was also used for this tour.

Yes I remember that visit too. One of the 707's (maybe both) had no APU, so the engine bay guys had to get them started with the GPU. Same story - had a wander through, interesting but nothing sinister. The crew chief gave us some cans of coke and we saved one which was left to sit by the TV in the engine bay crewroom. It was referred to as the can of Coke than Michael J gave us. After that tour, it was off with the MJ logos and on with what ever band was next to lease the aircraft!

Finally had time today to sort out the 'sleep-out', 'office', 'man cave'.. and found the final three photos I knew I had for this thread. Are the three photos related? Cant understand why SHAR would require tanker and strategic transport when it comes on an aircraft carrier? If I remember correctly, SHAR only came here once; in 1983/4 after Falklands war on the Ark?

If I remember correctly, SHAR only came here once; in 1983/4 after Falklands war on the Ark? Ahh... not related just convenient to upload together. SHAR's were off HMS Invincible late 1983 as part of a RN 'Goodwill' visit post the Falklands War. RAF Tristar was returning home New Zealand's detachment from 'Gulf War 1'. Circa (90/91) And the VC10 Tanker was here for an exercise supporting various air assets including A4, FA-18 and SHAR. (See previous photo posts - Date TBA)

Those VC10's were great looking aeroplanes. Do they still use them now?

Awesome photos Deane. I remember these visits so vividly so if I may add some photos and a wee story or two to your pics... The Ilyushin IL-76 "Mainstay" (76822) operated by Pacific Express had arrived at Whenuapai during November 1992 for the Auckland Air Expo 92. The GR.3 Harrier (ZD668 / 3E (cn 712229) was delivered from Britain to Whenuapai for the Air Expo and No. 5 Squadron hosted the Poms and their "Jump Jet. During the airshow, the Il76 was used for a 'mass' parachute drop in an attempt to break the world freefall record. IIRC, the attempt failed due to cloudy conditions. HISTORY:The U.S.S.R had fallen during the previous years and through the autumn of 1991, the Russian government took over the union government, ministry by ministry. In November 1991, Boris Yeltsin, who was elected in as the new President of Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Mikhail Gorbachev, issued an order banning the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) throughout the Russian republic. As a result, many former CPSU personnel left CPSU to join the new positions in the new Russian government. An order was issued that the Soviet Flag was to cease flying. Dont know how this aircraft managed to slip through the cracks but Sgt Lloyd Puriri and myself were tasked to paint out the Soviet Flag on the vertical stabiliser of the Ilyushin when it flew into Whenuapai. This pic is shortly after the IL76 had landed and the crew and pax had been through customs. Pacific Express must have been operating on a shoe-string budget because the Russian crew had arrived with little more than what they were wearing, very little money and a few bottles of vodka and packets of rough-as-guts cigarettes. Shortly afterwards, the IL76 was taxied down to be parked outside the SEMS/S&S hangar where the Harrier was unloaded. Llyod and I set to work to paint out the offending relic of a Soviet era. We tried the trusty spray gun first.... but the flag was too high and the wind too breezy.... so resorted to plan "B" I have another photo that I have yet to scan of the flag so will add this soon. [glow=red,2,300] GR-7 Harrier "Jump Jet" (ZD668 / 3E (cn 712229)[/glow] I note that ZD668 / 3E was scrapped and is now being restored at the Yanks Air Museum, Chino, Califrnia, USA. www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=ZD668[glow=red,2,300]... and the amphibious Beriev A40 Albatross [/glow]

Great photos of some very interesting times.
I love the 'cash register' in the navigators station in the Il-76! ;D

VERY interesting times Corsair67.
One of the funniest things I saw in the cockpit of the IL76 was when one of the crew took us up to have a look. The thing that struck me first was the GHASTLY colour... kind of a "Puke Green". Anyway, he pulls out a draw fromthe Nav station that housed an antiquated keyboard and flicked a couple of switches so he could power it up. Well nothing happened when he flicked the switch so, and no word of a lie, he hit the crap out of the keyboad and panel housing all the switches! It was like straight of of Star Wars when Han Solo does the same to the Millenium Falcon.... and then the station lit up like a Christmas tree.... then in his Russian/English drawl he said ...."piece of shit Russian crap". It was the funniest thing ever and almost pissed myself laughing. ;D
