This aircraft was never a "warbird" so am going to resist the temptation to put her in RNZAF markings! I would like to put her in her marking she wore flying with the Canterbury Aero Club and in so doing show respect for her civilian service from 1953 onwards. (She crashed in 1965 but not while with the CAC) ;D ;D ;D ;D A happy happy Baz! ;D ;D ;D [/quote] Was this photo taken in Invercargill? background sure looks like it.

When I shook hands on buying her I went home, googled BBZ and this was a photo I found. Would be nice to know where it was taken.

I really like the classic retro paint scheme....going to look really good! I think their Super Cub is painted in a similar scheme, well it was when I was learning how to fly down there in 1997

Oh funny. How fast does your plane go?

Yes - all in my dreams... must admit! At least you have something wonderful that will fly - one day soon...

Yes - all in my dreams... must admit! At least you have something wonderful that will fly - one day soon... Soon.........wonder how soon? I've been talking to other Auster owner/rebuilders and they all agree a bit more "go" up front will make all the difference to the Auster. Re engining Austers to something like an O-320 Lycoming only gives another 20 horsepower (from 130 to 150) but it makes the take off and climb performance that much better and a bit more of a safety margin. With my J5F having shorter wings she has a longer take off roll so this would help. However i want to keep her original so the decision has been made to upgrade the Gipsy from a 1 to a 1C going from 130hp to 145hp(supposedly). The 1C is the high compression version of the 1 (6:1 as opposed to 5.25:1) and although outwardly the same has a few changes. So i need 4 Alloy heads (got 1 and three on the way)longer cylinder head hold down studs, High Compression pistons and a big throat carburetor. As in most projects a bit of trading takes place between owners and Anthony and i have been doing this a lot. So pretty much all my needs have come from or via Anthony and very much appreciated. (Even though it means my Auster will be way faster than his T7!) Pictured below are a set of the studs mentioned and a big throat carb. However upon inspection I see it doesn't have a float! Not to worry I have a few of the standard carbs which should have what I need (as long as they didn't change anything between the two types!) Hmmm where's the float? Fortunately a J5F (actually the second one built) had a similar conversion done in the UK. G-AMMS was upgraded to 145hp by installing a Gipsy Major 10-2 (as used in the Chipmunks). This made it a J5L. Then they went to 155hp and put a Bombardier Cirrus making her a J5K which is how she flies today: shortfinals.wordpress.com/2009/02/16/g-amms-not-an-alpha-but-alphabet-soup-again/ The plan is to keep her designation as a J5F but apply for a mod to incorporate a 1C. It will be interesting to see how she goes especially as i'll be swinging the big RAF wooden prop as used on the 145hp Austers. (Much sought after by Chipmunk owners I hear.)

That's all good news!! Seems like she will be faster than a Chippy in the end... - might have to get a Cessna for photo ship... all interesting stuff. Carbie looks clean inside - yep, sure needs a pivot shaft and the float and the float valve? Even the detailed stuff is interesting - thanks.

My Auster started life as a J/1 (100hp) and has been retrofitted with a Gypsy 10mk2(145hp) making it a J/1S (S because it started life as a J/1). If it was factory fitted with the gypsy at the factory it would make it a J/1B (but you try telling CAA that...). And she goes very nicely with the big engine. Prop swinging is easy too!

Really wow didn't know that Mit! What does she cruise at? We'll have to have a race! Just had a chat with Andrew Vincent about the carb and basically the carbs are the same for the 130HP and 145HP (as in 1 and 1C) its just the throat and jets that are different. So as I have several standard carbs I'm good to go!

She is happy at 100-110 mph, I do tend to use higher power settings that most people, but she loves it.
A race ay?! I will have to get that "high speed" bees wax reinstalled, I guess in I win for the time being.....

Yes you might have to give me a few minutes to get my Auster "race ready". Did I say minutes I meant years!

I decided recently to add a tail light and wing tip lights to the rebuild process. BBZ (and it seems to be true for a lot of civil Austers of that period and the J5s in the RNZAF didnt either) never had wing tips lights or lights of any kind. However with the busier airspace these days "see and be seen" I'd like to have something more. To start the process I bought a wingtip light on EBay. Stupid me though didn't notice in the description: No Glass! However I then spied someone else on EBay selling a Glass (Green for starboard) for one and thankfully I won both auctions. Here's the light: Anthony tells me that one of the Avspecs wizards up in Ardmore does a mod for these where he puts a modern strobe light in place of the old bulb. He did a set for the Mosquito so we will be in good company. Anthony found me a tail light fairing to fit to the rudder. It goes right about here indicated by the snazzy white arrow on BCK: The glass for the wingtip light has arrived too

Anthony has also got me the fairing for the rudder that the taillight goes into from the UK. Wintip lights are also sorted (mostly) I have a friend in Australia who has a set of fairings for those which he is going to lend me to make copies from.

Do you have the ID light that goes through the floor? Actually I'm not sure they put that on your version of the Auster. But if you want one of those I have spares.

Cor something extra?? Gee wonder what that could be. I've been busy paint stripping this afternoon. First the U clamps that hold the brake "distributor" to the fuselage frame. Before: And after (although still have to do the underside): Looks like these were anodised before being painted. Since i had to wait while the stripper did its evil work (well evil for the paint!) I applied some stripper to the door sills: Still have the Canterbury Aero Club red paint on too. The metal is in good condition apart from a few little dings which I'll blend out.
