Heya, One of our lady at work's father was a rear-gunner on a Lancaster. She's trying to find out more info, like what aircraft he flew on etc. I looked on www.worldwar2exraf.co.uk/index.html to no avail. Where's the best place to look? (His name is Albert Edward James Bassett)

Hi Chris,
Is her father deceased? Either way, she can apply to get his service records which should be with the National Archives in Wellington. However the name is not coming up on the Archway search engine (is the surname spelled correctly?). She should contact the Archive anyway as they should have his records. They will show dates and places of his postings, etc, and from there the aircraft types, etc can be worked out. He should have had a Flying Log Book (all aircrew did) so perhaps someone in the family has this, or if not again check with the archives or the RNZAF Museum as it may have gone to them at some stage.

Perhaps she might like to look at "Just Jane", the Lancaster which the Panton brothers and their families have restored to taxiable condition. If she wanted to go to the UK she could visit the museum and even take a taxi-ride in the aircraft. www.lincsaviation.co.uk/These are some I took when I rode in JJ last June. I also have a lot of information about Lancs in the Pacific.

Motat's closer Chris. If you ask the right person there you can get a tour inside their Lanc usually.
