Dave, what we had in 1939 was obsolete combat aircraft, reconnaissance/light bombers, no fighters and no transport aircraft. At least today's air force fleet is mostly modern in trainers and helicopters! We were in 1939, the second wealthiest nation on the allied side (per capita) and spent the 2nd largest % of GDP on the war. Comparatively now our wealth is less than 1/3 of what it was*. Our military position is quite grim and that's likely to be understated. *New Zealand's economic position at the beginning of the war croakingcassandra.com/2019/09/03/80-years-today-since-we-entered-world-war-two/A quick review of the Wikipedia list of per capita wealth shows our wealth as about 1/3 of the of the current top 3 (NZ was in the worlds top 3 for 50 or so years

What has a USAF tanker got to do with the RNZAF Transport fleet?

What has a USAF tanker got to do with the RNZAF Transport fleet? Im guessing probably in same way that one RAAF KC-30 will be kitted out as a long range VIP/ comms post. Ie haul some gear, fuel and the "ruling" rabble. Would be good regional boost if NZ did that..ie buy a transport and aerial refueler. Bit like that new huge tanker the RNZN is getting.

Whilst a KC-46 or A330-MRTT acquisition would make sense, the DCP 2019 Cabinet papers release clearly states that the B757 replacement will be like for like. Part of the problem, as I see it, is sticker price shock and a lack of foresight.

Get Boeing to give us half a dozen Max 8s, and if we could sort them out, Boing would give us anything we want, I think they(B) just want them to go away. isc

Could happen to any air-craft... I don't think their age has to do with this to be honest... My guess is more on wear on the tyre not checked properly during maintenance and or prechecks ...

Yes tyres won't be 50 years old. If it was 3 burst then I doubt it was symmetrically one per oleo strut therefore I suspect some reasonable damage has been done to at least one strut!?!

What's the anti skid system on the P-3? could that 'lock up'?

Does the P3 actually have an anti-skid system though?

The P3 does not have anti-skid. I think the Electra had ant-skid but Lockheed deleted it for the military P3

You shouldn't rest your feet on the brake pedals when lining up for a landing!

For strategic reasons when a P8 is deployed, what sort of kit will be need to support this aircraft. have heard some chat about at least double the amount that the P3 would take and some heavy items. So will the C130J be capable of this or will it need something bigger ?

We'll just ask our mates the Aussies to 'give us a lift, Bro'. If they are still talking to us.

I wonder if , with all the spending on Covid , will the kitty have enough to buy new Hercules. The ongoing responsibilty for aid the Pacific ( vanuatu currently ) may keep it high on the list .

I have asked myself similar questions. Australia are remaining committed to existing defence acquisitions. New Zealand has left it too late to adjust our defence thinking to meet international realities.
