On the 30th July 1915 Lieutenant George P Merz of the AFC became the first Australian Airman killed in action. L/t Merz and his observer, L/t Burn a New Zealand Army officer, operating with the AFC half flight in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) took off in a Caudron to fly from Naziriyeh to Basra.
They were forced down in the desert and attacked by hostile Arab tribesmen, although only armed with their pistols they managed to kill or wound several of their attackers before being killed, their bodies were never recovered.
