Navy names new ship Taupo

A new Royal New Zealand Navy ship has been named Taupo.
Taupo is the last of four inshore patrol ships built by BAE Ship Builders in Whangarei. The navy say this is part of seven new ships under its Project Protector.
The first was multi role ship HMNZS Canterbury and it was followed by the offshore patrol ships Otago and Wellington.
Navy head Rear Admiral David Ledson welcomed the new name.
"Taupo is a name with a proud history in the navy - first of a Loch Class frigate and then a Lake Class patrol craft," he said.
"These ships have a valued place in the navy's story - and made a valuable contribution to it."
The Inshore Patrol Vessels will be used to conduct maritime surveillance in support of other Customs and Fisheries.
Taupo, 340 tonnes, has a range of 3000 nautical miles with a ship's company of 20 and space for up to 36.
A Northland man, Lieutenant Jonathan Clarkson will command her.

Wheres the .50 gonna be mounted? Il be able to take a few snaps this sunday il be directly opposite across the water for some war games.. a perfect background for beach assault  |

pretty sure they all have to be rebuilt to comply with regulations. All inshore and off shore new ships are going to be a way off yet before coming into service.

You would think they wouldnt have to since these are copies of those used in the phillipine coast guard - but oh no, somewhere along the line they just HAD to change the design
Tenix no longer exists here in whangarei.. its called BAE systems or somthing.. ther was a story on the new vessel in the local paper couple weeks back..
None the less Taupo will do some good around here once its allowed to sail ;D

So all four IPV are in the water; none have been delivered
One OPV (ed: sorry, BOTH opv, coz I just checked!) is/are in the water, none have been delivered.
One MRV has been delivered, and doesn't go anywhere.
WTF?

Is there room for a chopper onboard? Nice looking vessel. Based on that statement, I assume the three vessels are the MRV and the two OPV. I am not sure if there is enough flat deck on the IPV to take a 109 for POD - Patrolboat Onboard Delivery ;D. But then again, there are only five 109's/POD's anyway! |

But while in Butterworth, I had the equivalent shirt made and, of course, all the crab acoutrements fitted, just as in the pic. It was much better than looking like a pillock wearing SD's on the quarterdeck at some marvelous Cocker's P's in Georgetown!

Only ever heard that 805 Squadron (Sea Venom & Sea Fury era) (aka VF-805) had a special cummerbund for Mess Dinner rig but I never saw it. Later I guess some examples were made - it had an unflattering name like 'asparagus omelette' or similar - perhaps the older Navy will know. A pic would be good pahleeze OldNavy. ;D The asparagus was the twin palm trees and omelette the half round orange sand for "Over Sea & Sand". The badge was on the front of the cummerbund.  |
