A very good effort Shorty, thanks for taking time to add the names. I can see a few more now but I think there must be a large portion of the Auckland Air Force in amongst them.
I remember a Karen Werata..... we had a fun run at Ohakea and she must have passed me at the finish. I got ribbed for weeks after about coming home 2 seconds behind her.

If that is him, he looked older in that 1972 shot than when I knew him 1993! Maybe it's his Dad?
Terry was a Warrant Officer in the Vietnam War with the Army and switched to the RNZAF as a W/O, so if it's him he must have been an instructor. He's wearing a fair few medals so maybe it is him, and I note he hasn't got sticky tape on his chest so must have been an instructor on your course. I really don't recall him being bald like that though.
Beeza, I think his daughter was in the RNZAF too so maybe that was her?

Butch O'Carrol worked in the gun room at Ohakea for many years as a civy.

Terry Werata was the Warrant Officer at GSTS then and he was wearing his Army tankies uniform then, so I wonder if the Werata in photo the is a brother or cuzzie.

Was his name spelled Werata? I always thought it was Wereta. Sorry Terry, wherever you are on the great big golf course in the sky.

Interesting stuff, in the 79 SNCO photo, I have met quite a few of these people during my 20 years of undetected good conduct. I came across Morty Mortimer in 1986-7, during a course at Wigram just before easter weekend, we shared a grotty 2 room Motel, on Riccarton Road, walking distance from the Bush Inn. He was into Stationary engines if I recall. I was on 41Sqn in Singapore with Mr Johnson, also came across Rob Oakden, and Fitzgerald too. I have definately met Shorty at some stage too but not sure when. In the last photo Tech Admin 82 again Shorty, Ace Wilson (WIG 72?) Mike Proctor, & Stu Bone all of whom would be more senior to me. Great Memories

Morty can still be found at Ohakea - usually at the Engineering Club where his wife runs the Base Welfare hirepool amongst other things. He is still into anything powered by steam and owns a traction engine I think!

I know them as disco shirts... did we all refer to them as that ?
Mine was always too tight... not a problem these days as it is too short, sleeves too tight etc.

Another question: How were people selected for promotion?
I assume it had something to do with competency and latent leadership skills.
Or was it a matter of it's Fred's turn to get his stripes?
I heard, whilst in, that a Tech Charge was a fast track to Corporal's stripes. Along the line of " We've heard his name somewhere so he must be good otherwise we never would have heard of him"

It's not called tech admin anymore, it's TSMA, Technical Senior NCO Maintenance Administration or some such.
Yes, of course S&S do it, they run bays and certify work on aeronautical equipment just as much as any other tech trade.

I recall my JNCO course as on the flight down to Wigram from Ohakea, our Dak lost a engine (port) over the inland Kaikoura range. The Para Daka was fully laden and was slowly loosing height. We got to Wigram successfully.
I can't recall a lot of the course but I had to talk to the class about a spot on the blackboard for 10 minutes!! We did some "orienteering" out in "Little Malaya" in the Ashley forest. We were also "resupplyed by a Harvard using dropable canisters. We also had to do a cross country map reading exercse carrying some sort of back-pack R/T.
