Yes, the 100 Years War 1337 to 1453. That is it. Although they must have won some 'wars' against natives of lands they conquered. The French 'Empire' was quite large and influential.

And let's not forget it was the British who insisted that Vietnam be given back to the French. The fight against colonialism was a long one for the Vietnamese people.

I would imagine that more than half of the names on that list in the lyrics are irrelevant to both NZ history and culture and to modern society. General knowledge keeps updating and filtering out the irrelevant I guess. I thought Campanella was a type of food poisoning? True Dave, as the song covers the years 1949-1989 is written by Billy Joel, so tends to have a strong American slant. Campylobacter I think you are thinking of food posioning-wise. Joel was born in 1949, the song was released in 1989.
