Old post I know, but I'm playing catch-up as a new boy: great shot of a great little machine: it took me all over the world and taught me things I never knew I needed to know.

WP, 01 Apr 2000. Photo taken from the top of the 40 Sqn hangar. Takeoff roll, at very light weights - empty, with about 12000lbs fuel, from memory, was commenced half-way along the runway - it only needed next to nothing at those weights. Tail skid didn't mis by much (scraped it once). Landing aim point was the same spot (bit spooky landing half-way down!), right in front of the crowd. We rolled at full power - I waved at a bunch of people right beside the strip on the left, before brakes release - and they took their fingers out of the their ears to wave back. Made us laugh.

Here's another one, same day. 250agl across the field...conveniently ignoring the height of the hangars. Speed was 320 indicated -P3 and 727 would have liked to have gone quite a bit faster, but the poor old C130 limit is 324...and we had to do a gentle descent to cross the field at that speed or the C130 would struggle to keep up. In practice, over the west cost up 90 mile beach, the P3 and us (727) had a drag race (as you do...P3 captain was an old course mate) - at 2000ft, from line abreast at 200kts, the deal was whoever was in front when we got to 350kts was the winner...the P3 boys thought this would be easy - big paddle props would pull an initial advantage the 727 wouldn't overcome. Wrong! - the P3 jumped out about 10ft and the 727 blew past, winning by a country mile... then they wanted to start from less than 200kts, but we cried off- minimum clean speed was 200 the way we operated the 727. We went home in echelon right, through the Manukau heads and down Auckland's runway at 250ft (ish..) at 320+..just to wave the flag (encouraged and authorised to do so!) free upload pictures

It always disappoints me that the above photo makes the spacing between the aircraft look much more than it was, due to the angle of the shot-it was properly 'formation' close-the referece points for the respective pilots' eye view were worked by pacing it out on the ground, allowing 15 ft lateral spacing.

Sure was me, that was a truly excellent day at work. I think that was the first time too that we backed up on reversers, impressed the heck out of much of 40 Sqn as they didn't know that the 727 could do that.

Very handy, being able to do a 3 point turn in a moderately big jet.
need to work the hill starts though.

"Herb" had been commentating for our A4 display slot beforehand, but he was then press ganged into commentating for the 40/5 squadron formation display pictured above. Never one to shy from controversy, he delivered a spirited repartee over the PA on transport squadrons and their operations that contained more than a few "this is not the professional image that we're trying to portray to the public" type comments. His "humorous" commentary later led to a hat-on reprimand from the AOC!

He was my student too, on the 339. Should have chopped him when I had the chance!

Same guy ? I assumed 'Herb' would have been a little more senior, I was thinking Herbert Bruce.... Maybe I have the wrong guy but I was wearing a smile as I was thinking of the world view from a knuck.

Herbert Brice K8 was my boss at 14 as a QFI. The other Herb was about 18 years junior..
