Yep, should be Baz. If you stumble upon a cache of DC3 cockpit bits between now and then, bring those too. My red-hot overseas contact has gone completely cold. . . . now back to that Stupendously beautiful low-back Spitfire. I know aircraft are a bit like your kids, . . . you not supposed to play favourites, but aside from the Mk IX, I really like this particular machine. I used to oggle the Mk 14 alongside the 16 and this one did it for me hands down ! Got me quite excited to see it mated with its big bits again and on its feet. Good things take time. Maybe the nose art should be a block of cheese !

This will stay in NZ and be based at Blenheim. Murray Miers also owns the FW190 replica there. This Spitfire is the one that Sir Tim Wallis crashed in. Ah right, thanks for that info Dave, I knew the Tim Wallis one was being rebuilt but I wasn't sure if it was the same one as this.

I feel the opposite Peter. I have much more fondness for the Merlin engined Spitfires than the Griffon ones, and I prefer the high backs in both far more than the cut-backs which imho ruined the lines of the aircraft. However I have never had the opportunity to see the Mk XIVe in action so maybe that might change my mind.

Spelling Police here again, it is Gaze not Glaze.

The nose of the Merlin Spitfire looks so much more graceful than the big bulging Griffon installation. Still a Spitfire is a Spitfire and I will still love seeing this XIV fly again!

How could you not love the Mk XIV, and all that grunt up the front???
I remember reading an article in an aviation mag about an Australia pilot who joined 453SQN (?) near the end of the war, and on his first all-of-squadron formation flight he was delegated to be tail-end Charlie. He knew he'd need to open the taps a bit to catch up with his squadron after takeoff, but wasn't quite up to speed as to how slippery the Mk XIV actually was in the air - until he overtook everyone else in the formation - including a rather unimpressed formation leader! ;D

I remember Mark Hanna describing the chalk-cheese comparison of the 14 vs 16. Weight, power, control forces etc. Apparently on the 14, every power setting change demanded a trim change!

I do love the XIV, but I love the earlier ones more. That's all. I'm really looking forward to the three Spitfires together and the comparison.

Any updates with this restoration now that the Mosquito is happily out and about?
