Interesting discussion. As a fraidy cat I have always turned down opportunities to go ballooning after watching two incidents on our farm near Muriwai, where the downdraft forced the basket into tree tops. Massive gas burning and roaring and away they went leaving paddocks suddenly stock free and us with mouths open. My fraidy cat preservation system was increased on Tuesday morning when a very large blue balloon landed between the new North Shore and SH 16 motorways. As well as being within Whenuapai controlled airspace , a motorway at rush hour isnt the best place to land next to. I will stick to the more normal methods of flying , thank you. That was my thoughts exactly. Just the lack of control and being at the mercy of the winds and atmosphere.

The authorities are still harping on about the log book anomalies. We don't know at this stage if the Grab Test is related or indeed if the missed AD was as well. The LAME has to review all AD's when they come out at the end of each month and then make a determination in every log book. The Balloon ones are found here; www.caa.govt.nz/Airworthiness_Directives/bal.pdfwww.caa.govt.nz/Airworthiness_Directives/Airworthiness_Directives_Home.htmThose here that own aircraft will probably be familiar with them. Not only do you get Aircraft, both your type and General but it is the same for the engine. Then the prop, carb, electric, seats, brakes etc.. it just goes on. Something like the avionics is rarely applicable to your aircraft but has to be addressed, reviewed and then recorded nonetheless... The Cameron Balloon maintenance schedules are available from the web as are those of Maule aircraft and several other manufacturers. A very easy way to keep up to date without the nause of amending all your publications as well. www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/6500817/Balloon-engineer-under-investigationEvery time there is an accident the spotlight naturally is swung around onto the maintenance records. It can easily be seen why maintainers are not interested in taking on dodgy customers.... they are not only a danger to themselves.
