from the Kapiti Observer....Newly restored Catalina WWII flying boat back in NZ skiesBy KAROLINE TUCKEY | 6:45PM - Tuesday, 22 March 2016Catalina Society member David Perry, with the newly restored 1944 PBY-5A Catalina amphibious flying boat, at Kapiti Coast Airport on Tuesday. — Photo: Karoline Tuckey/Fairfax NZ.A WWII FLYING BOAT has touched down at Kapiti Coast Airport on its first voyage since restoration.
The 1944 PBY-5A Catalina is among a string of aircraft making landfall at stops down the country on the way to Warbirds over Wanaka, which starts on Friday.
In the last few days a handful of Yak52 aerobatics planes and RV-12s have stopped in at Kapiti, and more exotic aircraft are expected, Aero Club chief flying officer John Harwood said.
The twin-engine Catalina visited briefly on Tuesday afternoon and was greeted by a small crowd of enthusiasts.Pilots Brett Emeny and Deb Bond are among enthusiasts who have restored a 1944 WWII PBY-5A Catalina, which is making its way to Warbirds Over Wanaka. — Photo: Karoline Tuckey/Fairfax NZ.Pilot Brett Emeny said during the war the planes were used for bombing, reconnaissance and rescues, and it is the only one still flying in the Southern Hemisphere.
He is among more than 100 Catalina Preservation Society members who have been restoring the plane since 1994.
Although Catalinas were flown by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in WWII this one was originally made for the Royal Canadian Air Force, but has been repainted with RNZAF colours.
Before the restoration it was used to fly tourists over the Nile. The Catalina PBY-5A taking off from Kapiti Coast Airport, on the way down to Warbirds Over Wanaka, on Tuesday afternoon. — Photo: Karoline Tuckey/Fairfax NZ.Harwood said there had been a lot of interest in the plane's arrival, and hoped more people would see it on the return flight, expected to be next Tuesday.
“It's great to see these old planes, there's a phenomenal history there.”www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/kapiti-observer/78173301

Actually more correctly ours is a Canadian Vickers Canso or a PVB-1A

I wish the photos in that link were bigger, I can't wait to see the scheme complete! Does anyone know if they've flipped the starboard finflash to how it should be?

should be red facing forward, both sides! Maybe its been corrected? One of our team is heading down with appropriate colored electrical tape to solve the issue if necessary!! Believe me, when your manning the stand, there is nothing worse than being told by your public "You got the Fin Flash wrong" ten thousand times!! It is bad enough having to explain the story of the elephant decals on the cockpit.

Will the Cat be taking passengers for rides at wanaka? I think so - KTJ posted in the WoW thread he's already booked in for one! That flight I'm on is one of two special flights being put on for Warbirds Over Wanaka Club members. However, I presume there will be flights for the general public on the usual cost-sharing basis....perhaps on Easter Monday, or maybe following the airshow on Saturday and Sunday? The WOW Club flights are at 8:30am on both the Saturday and Sunday. Club members also get a considerable discount on the usual price, so as Catalina joy-rides are done on a cost-sharing basis with the crew, I presume Mandy Deans has arranged sponsorship from somewhere for the club flights to make up the difference.

I've been digging back through my photograph archives, and I came up with the following video clip taken onboard ZK-PBY during Warbirds Over Wanaka 2008.
Conditions were extremely turbulent and the surface of the lake was rather choppy, so it was only a touch & go, but it's a blast from the past.
Note the Warbirds Dakota towards the top of the frame flying so passengers onboard the DC-3 could observe the Catalina landing on the lake. Immediately after the Catalina flight, I went for a flight on the Dakota and on that flight they also overflew the Catalina doing a touch & go on the lake. The two aeroplanes were co-ordinating with each other on those joyrides that weekend.
The video isn't HD (I was using much more basic camera gear back then), but it is interesting.
Because of the turbulence, the camera was being bounced around, so I'm currently undertaking an edit at YouTube to steady it, then I'll see whether to switch to the steadied version or leave the video in its raw state as uploaded.
EDIT: YouTube's editing steadied it considerably, but also resulted in much lower resolution, so I've left it as is, warts & all.
