The first Concorde to visit Australia was G-BSST which arrived in Sydney on 17 June 1972. That's 40 years ago this Sunday.

Haven't had the experience of flying in one, but were shown around the Concorde base at Fairford in 1976, and later watched one doing touch and goes at Brize Norton - literally made the earth shake. The Fleet Air Arm Museum had one at that time, but was due to be opened to viewing the weekend after I was there. Finally got inside one at Duxford in 2007.

Thanks. Now to find a diecast model of it. There are a few out there on the WWW, Hogan re-released theirs last year in diecast 1:200 scale, a superb model I enjoyed watching that 'back in the day' video - 2 hours from Perth to Auckland, what a dream

Does anyone know how close Concord came to NewZealand during its " World Tour " of 1972 ? ( if at all ) ? I saw a reference that stated " it flew as far afield as Austraila and NewZealand " , but cant locate anything else . I also found this " Government ministers, Qantas executives and airport officials flew on the two supersonic "demos" from Sydney, the second of which took the aircraft, after a wide sweep over the Tasman Sea, to Melbourne. Here, two more flights were made and the names of more distinguished passengers added to the list. " - which seems to suggest it may have at least headded in this direction ? Hi lumpy Not sure how to use this site, but I was a television reporter for the NZBC and covered the visit of 002 to Sydney. A cameraman, Waynne Williams, and I were sent from New Zealand after British Airways cancelled their exhibition flight to Auckland at the last minute due, I think, to runway issues at Auckland. Although the press were not normally allowed on these flights, it was decided to let TVNZ film a flight out of Sydney so that kiwis could at least see on television what they were going to miss "in person". We flew for about an hour, filmed the curve of the earth from the cockpit, interviewed Brian Trubshaw, took an enormous u-turn about halfway to NZ and head back to Australia. Our film was shown in edited form on the news and later more fully on a news backgrounder programme. We had an unforgettable time, and drank lots of champagne - British Airways knew how to do pr! I recently tried to locate the film in television archives but was told it wasn't there. What a tragedy. Let's know if there's any more you want to know. Regards Kevin Milne (Kevvy)

That's a great story Kevin, welcome to the forum. I love your work by the way. Are you an aviation enthusiast in general?

I second everything Dave said, welcome aboard Kevin! What a thrill to fly on Concorde and be paid to do so!

I remember being at Christchurch Airport, oh my, must have been in approx mid 90's and by chance a Concorde was taxting in. I had a video camera on me and filmed it, wouldn't have a clue where that tape was and my nikon was not even thought of then. So how many times did we see a concorde in NZ skies and at what airports I remember some shots of Skyhawks accompanying one into Auckland and it was ahuge event, not sure if this was after the one i saw at CHC or not. memories anyone ? Hi. Was going through a box of old papers and found the progam for 'The Biggest and Fastest Aircraft Display'. This was an open day held at Christchurch International Airport on Sunday October 8, 1989 from 1pm to 6pm. Featured: British Airways Concord U.S.A.F. - C-141B Starlifter; C-5 Galaxy, R.N.Z.A.F. - Friendship; C14-B Airtrainer; Iroquois Helicopter Squirrel Helicoper [Helicopters NZ Ltd]. Also static displays including: New Zealand Antarctic Program; R.N.Z.A.F. Air Force Museum; Antarctic Heritage Trust. Google concorde at christhurch as it usually brings up photos. A Concorde flight did arr in CHC from Papetee on April 08 1989 & departed for SYD on April 12 1989 - this was the flight the Concorde lost part of her rudder.

Mustang - may have been but was not listed in the program. I don't think I attended that day as I can't find any photos of it.

Did anyone attend this 'The Biggest and Fastest Aircraft Display'? Or have a listing of the serials of the aircraft? I'd like to add it to the Airshow Archive.

I recall three Concorde visits to Auckland. The first was in 1986, a big event but I didn't go out to the Airport, just saw it from a distance. One of my aviation regrets not going to Mangere that day, I think I was on the North shore visiting a lady friend. The other two visits of Concorde were Air France, but not sure of the dates. The first Air France visit I saw was when it returned back to Auckland after being parked at Christchurch because of security worries at Auckland, probably due to the Rainbow Warrior sinking. I watched with my daughter that day from a unsealed road off Puhinui Road before the 'new' access from the East. The second I thought was around the America's Cup event in 2000 but I might be wrong. I watched this triangular shape come through the low cloud on approach from the East, what a great sight from the viewing area on the right as your approach from the East. Great memories.
