In the RNZAF when they say an aircraft 'fell over', it's jargon for having technical problems that have stopped it from flying. However, this photo takes on a whole new meaning, more literal! www.strangemilitary.com/content/item/106546.htmlWhat the heck happened? When was this? How? I note the photographer was Bede Perham, who was an RNZAF Armourer - we trained at No. 1TTS Hobsonville at the same time in 1991. Great guy, haven't seen him since then.

This photo is also on Calum's site (A4 Alley): I think someone walked out onto the wing too far while the Squawk was being washed down.
Calum/Don can you confirm?

Dodgy Bede Perham is in the RAAF working on F111s.
If I remember correctly the airctaft was minus it's tail (and/or engine) and due to the odd weight and ballance did indeed fall over as someone walked onto the wing. Normally walking onto the wing would not do this! I thin it was outside to be defueled. I can't get the photo in the link to load, but unless this happened twice thats the story.

Thats a terrible photo. I remember the Skyhawk NZ 6211 was involved in the mid air collision in 1989 and I wonder weather it was being repaired at the time. The wings dont look in good shape. I saw some of the A4s at Woodbourne the other day and there 20mm cannons have been removed and the picture shows there are none there either so perhaps it was later than that but I guess the guns are taken out for overhauls.
Eitherway what a shocker

I don't think Bede was in the RNZAf in 1989.

It's not recent going by the camouflage. Appears to be post 'Kahu' though if the aerial behind the cockpit is any clue. '11 was the aircraft lost at Nowra if I recall correctly.

It was either August or September 1997. I was on 75 sqn at the time. My flatmate, who's now the SNCOic at CPE, was juat about to go to Ohakea to do his junior photographers course but was still working at SAMF as an armourer when it happened and ended up taking the official photographs. Obviously Bede was standing next to him at the time.
The guns were taken in and out all the time, and they didn't go to WB with the a/c for groups. We still have the 20mms stored at Ohakea.

Poor old 6211 had just been inducted into No. 1RD and was outside for its pre service wash. The engine was out and the wing hadn't been defuelled. The slope of the tarmac allowed the fuel remaining from its positioning flight to slosh into the starboard side. Poor old Hilton Baker 'jumped the hump' with his scrubbing brush onto the STBD wing and as he walked his way to the wingtip, she toppled. Luckily the air-to-air refuel probe kept the radome off the ground. Damage was minor but Doughey shit his pants!

Thanks Phil, you're so kind! Don would have better information than me on this incident though I do have an original print of this photo (somewhere) that was kindly provided to me by the person in the green shirt & black shorts behind the A4. As I understand it the incident occurred about 1993? at the eastern end of the old Kahu Upgrade hangar, although it was post-Kahu. The jet was undergoing a DLM and separated for engine removal. The defuel had not removed all of the fuel from the wing tanks making the aircraft unbalanced. The story that was told to me; the two guys tasked with washing the aircraft started on alternate sides, one upper, one lower. As the upper aircraftman moved outwards onto the right wing the remaining fuel in the right wing tank shifted and caused the unbalanced situation. No one was injured as the aircraftman on the underneath was washing the left wing as it moved upwards and away from him. I don't believe there was any disciplinary action taken.
7 Nov 2014 I'm still in the RAAF, a year at 10 months at RAAF Wagga, 10 years at Amberley and now nearly 2 years at Williamtown. I'm sure Glen had great farewell though I'm not sure he will ever really leave, he has put so much of his life into it. Cheers!!
