Yayyyyy more Auster goodness! But i'd say it would be better on the RNZAF page as I don't think the NZ navy actually operated them did they?

I see this particular RNZAF J5 is still airworthy and is in the 1950's RNZAF silver with yellow bands and fern-leaf roundels in Australia.

Sir Nibbs of Waikato understands that the Austers of No. 6 Squadron were purely RNZAF. The squadron was a composite unit of both regular force and territorial members, and performed maritime duties and navy co-operation. But co-operating with the navy doesn't mean they are navy.
No doubt someone will contradict me and say I have it all wrong..

I'll have to show this to John Kelly near Nelson as he is rebuilding NZ1701 (BQL). I'm always amazed the Auster managed to fly with those big floats on. There was even a wartime test with a MK V which wasn't that impressive. I suppose the T7 with a bit more power up front (145hp approx) wouldn't be too bad but did our J5 Austers have 130hp Gipsy Major series 1 engines or the more powerful 1C (143HP I think?) I know the Canadian Tiger Moths had the 1C at some stage and I know the RNZAF put Tiger Moth engines in the Austers so wonder which one they had? Could ask John I suppose as BQL's logboomight indicate whether she has her original RNZAF supplied engine.
