10,000 uniformed people would have been about the total OF ALL THREE SERVICES. The RNZAF certainly didn't have anything like 10,000 people, 4200 in fact in 1982. I'm not saying that I don't believe you. I only know what I read and saw back then. I don't think it mentioned the personnel in the other services. So why it showed over 10,000 as a total figure if your figures are accurate (and I'm certainly not saying that they aren't), I don't know. In any case, I think that we can all agree that the services - the RNZAF in particular - has been scaled back quite heavily since then. I'm not bothered if you believe me or not, but what I said is confirmed by fact : there were never 10,000 people in the air force in any year, from 1949 to the present day, the actual figures being between 3500-4500.

all right, all right guys. or Dave will have to get the heavies out. Lets just say the good old days when there were masses of people around have certainly gone. A leaner meaner force ready to hold off any deterrent. hehehehehehehe
Just hope warbirds have a hotline number to their scramble hut out there at Ardmore..

Phil, I believe you. Either the figure I saw was a glitch, I was delusional, or it was the figure for all three service branches. In other words, typical admin.

I remember that form. Had one permantly filled out just needed to sign & date it. But didn't need it as was on 8 year contract and I didn't want to sign back on for a 20 year stint. They changed the enlistment contracts from 4, 8 or 12 year terms to a general term of 20 years whilst I was in. Never regreted my time in both RNZAF & RNZNVR. Had heaps fun and got the opportunity to do things that civvies wouldn't get to do. I am also a firm believer in the notion that a service life is very educational and character building.

I can't remember if I filled one out or not.I did my 20 and got an extension for 2 years and within that 2 years bought a house in Blenheim and tried in vain to get a posting there but no luck so left 6 months early.

So if you left early and didn't fill in a Form 717, are you therefore AWOL and on the run Beags? Like the A Team!
