They have way more staff than 99, I would imagine some of the contracted specialists are on obscene money.

I have fixed that Facebook link.
Just a note, if ever posting a link that starts with https:// then take out the 's' as the forum won't link it otherwise. With the s removed it works fine.

How about convincing all commercial airline pilots to refuse to take off if they have politicians and CAA staff aboard their aircraft - that would soon get things relooked at in a hurry. I'm told this action was taken successfully as a protest in the USA but I don't know the details. We have a huge number of CAA staff who live in Wairarapa and catch the second train from there each morning (it departs Masterton at 6:25am) and who used to get off at Petone, but now carry on into Wellington since CAA moved to their flash, expensive new offices in the Asteron Building across the road from Wellington Railway Station. Do you think we (us rail operational staff) should indulge in a bit of industrial action biffo involving that particular train? ;D

This may be helpful in taking out some of the guesswork in CAA salary payments in your calculations, although only for 2010-2011 FY. From the CAA Annual Report, which also includes financial on the incomes from fees and charges and of course the standard KPI performance criteria. Available here; www.caa.govt.nz/publicinfo/annualrepandprof.htm That isn't entirely correct. State service regulations require all state-owned organisations to report on salaries GREATER THAN $100K per annum. There is no requirement to report on salaries less than $100K. So I think you will find that report is just that....employees earning greater than $100K. There will almost certainly be a large number of employees earning less than that, but because there is no legal requirement to report on the salaries of those lesser-paid employees, they won't be mentioned in any offical reports.

So over 40% of CAA staff earn more than 100k. Earn? Paid - that's a matter of record. Earn - you'd need to sit and study their output before you can make a value judgement on how much they earn. Many people earn far more than they are paid. A significant number are paid a lot more than they earn.

While we are writing letters, keep in mind that Key did attend the FlyingNZ Nationals early this year. No doubt, so did lots of other people also attend. Anyway, he will be too busy with Hollywood moguls and his German mate, Dotcom! ;D

Judith Collins appears to also have an interest in Aviation, she may have a sympathetic ear.

The more I think about this the more certain I am it is a waste of the talking to CAA.
What I think needs to be done is firstly, lets have a close look into CAA current operating budget and where funds are going.
Then identify where cuts can be made to save money. The kind of cuts no one within CAA is prepared to make
Then take this information over CAA to local MPs (ideally opposition). If they can see it is something they can get their teeth into and increase their own profile (MP's love getting on the box) maybe it will grow legs.
Unfortunately moaning to CAA is flogging a dead horse (soon to be GA if we don't do something)
At the end of the day heads will need to roll in CAA and they only have themselves to blame

Go for it, take every avenue you can. I agree that the opposition may be a good way to go, pick an MP and see what happens.

I'm trying to think how we can use the Black Sands Fly In to publicise our cause - maybe if everyone brings a sign or placard to hang on or by their aeroplane... Theres often some CAA folk hanging around - although generally they are the good blokes who like and support GA....

Interesting pay rise at the top in that list of salaries - at least $130K!! From $409K up to $540K, and that's only if he went from the top of the previous band to the bottom of the next... it could be as much as $150K!! Now $150K is not a bad salary, but an INCREASE of $150K if you were earning $400K equates to a 37.5% pay increase. What did I get last time round? 3%, and considered myself one of the lucky ones!!!
