Hi all Some eight years ago a friend gave me the ex RNZAF ambulance in you see in the photos below. (The photos were taken today 01/10/2012) I hope to get the ambulance back on the road within a year, budget allowing! She is not a basket case but will need a fair amount of work to get her roadworthy again. The ambulance is an International, of 1954 -1957 era. I am looking for any pics, stories and/or history of this particular ambulance. (I could hardly find anything about this make/model of ambulance on Google.) Any help would be appreciated. Marcus

Tempero Coach Works in Oamaru may be a good contact as they made ambulances years ago before they were imported fully built up. Nice project - cheers

Hi all
bae, Luther and SEAN, thank you for the help and photos.
If all goes well I should have her at my place by Friday. I will then be able to have a good look at her, inside and out and take more photos. I should be able to find her identification plates/serial numbers with the aim of doing a more in-depth research of her past.

She is nice and rare now by the looks of things! Looking forward to seeing what you do with her.

Trying to work out, is that Wigram Base Hospital in the photo, or Woodbourne?

Hi Dave
As you chaps know way more about the RNZAF's history than I do, may I ask you to try and date the top b/w photo? Between the body of the ambulance and the tarmac is a Harvard and what seems to be a Devon with it's engine covers off. If my assumption is correct, what year/s could this pic have been taken?
When did the RNZAF phase out the International ambulances in favor of the Land-rower type?
Thanx
Marcus

I would have to put my money on the photo outside medical being taken at Ohakea with the water tower behind and the palm tree on the side. Not that I took too much notice when I limped or crawled up the steps. I can also recall being taken to Palmerston Hospital in 1982 in the back of an International Ambulance, not the most comfortable trip with an appendix just on bursting.

Actually you make a great point Paul about the palm tree, I don't think they wuld have grown in the frozen south. Must be Ohakea?

I notice the guys are wearing the old "Ski Caps"... Wonder when they were introduced, or went out of service... Might narrow things down a bit.

Dave pretty sure it is Woodbourne. IIRC the Wigram water tower was closer to the hangars. But I could be wrong.

Im sure I can recall these (IH) in use in the late 70's. The Ambulance looks in good condition.
Also recall the Provos had Morris Minor vans and some of the sqns had trekka's. Recall being chased around hobby by a provo van, never caught us, went back some months later and found they had concreted all the street signs in the ground........

Yes Wigram's tower was next to the swimming pool so the one in the photo is way too close for the hospital to be Wigram.

Thanx Marcus Those Internationals were still around in the early to mid 19 60s, until replaced by Landrover [Range Rover?] by the then RNZAF MT1 Ross McCabe in the late 1960s.

Hi all I know it is not a Mosquito or Anson.... but my ambulance "moved" for the first time in eight years today. We towed her out of the shed with the aim of getting her onto a roll-back. Unfortunately the chap with the roll-back had a call-out and we will only be able to bring her to my place tomorrow. She looks in fairly good nick but once in the sunlight it became evident that she will need a fair amount of work to get her roadworthy again. (Dave H, as she is not an aircraft should we keep the postings on this heading? Should we move it?) International (IH) AR 110 RNZAF Ambulance #37 Photo taken 4-10-2012

There's no problem with it being in this board, it is part of our aviation history having served in the RNZAF.
I note the roundel shows it has to be pre-1971.
