Cover for the P3s might not be so important in an Afghanistan type situation. Currently the bombs are dropped from pretty low level, about 700-1000 feet, making the aircraft incredibly vulnerable to any ground fire (much like the scenario from radiolicios on the previous page), remembering of course that the Mk82 'depth bomb' that is currently deployed is intended for use against subsurface contacts.
In the overland role the P3 would be deploying precision weapons (LGB and/or JDAM, possibly SLAMMER or something similar) and doing it from something like 20,000 -30,000 feet, out of range of ground fire.
I doubt the P3 would be deployed in this role if the forces we were operating with did not have total air supremacy.
