In the early 80's the airtrainers and helicopter crews were issued SPH4 helmets and the strike guys had APH6 helmets with dual visors I have both of them on my desk. the earlier strike helmets were British and had an inner soft helmet with a hard outer which included a visor.

Although I never fuigured out why the S&S guys paired american helmets with british O2 masks. Anyone have an idea why that was so?

We used the SPH4 helmets to train on at No. 1TTS and there were several still around the PTS Flying Clothing Bay in my time at Wigram (1991-93) but I never saw anyone wearing them for real. The Alpha had fully taken over by then.

I have 2 APH 6 helmet shells that I want to restore like the one I used on 14 Sqn when I was riding around in the Bluntie. Thew SPH I use in my Auster it has civilian mic and speakers in it and I used it when I was flying helicopters.
