On Saturday I picked up a copy of Bee Dawson's new book on the history of Wigram from the Air Force Museum. I haven't had a chance to read it yet but it looks interesting. $45 for 336 pages.

It looks like it only covers up until 1995 when the Base closed. At first glance the modern era (1970s/90s) seems pretty light in detail compared to the many chapters on the earlier years. Lots of photos I've never seen before.

It's good to see Bee's book is out at last, she has been working on this for a while now. I really must put that on my birthday list.

Hope it's better than her book on Hobsonville, that was a bit of a disappointment to me

Forget the aircraft.... the influential people who developed the base, the ordinary air force personnel who lived there The book is about us ! How many of us get a mention ?

Received my copy of this book last week, and have to say that I am enjoying it very much.
Some great photos in it, and it is really amazing to consider the part that Sockburn/Wigram played in NZ aviation.

I purchased a copy from Capital Books on Saturday.
I was pleasantly surprised when I got home to discover it had been signed by the author.

Haha, Baz is waiting to find out if there are any Osters in it... Well after 4 years I've finally read it! And Austers get mentioned more than once. Some of you have heard about the 1950s Airfield attack made by Aero Club aicraft on a sleeping 3 Squadron TAF and their Mustangs with flour bombs and that most evil of the Aero Club's arsenal the toilet roll! This is mentioned in the Wigram book but it also mentioned "3 Auster Aiglets" in the attacking force. I'd love to know which Austers they were (along with the Miles Magisters and Tiger Moth). I'm not sure mine would have taken part but who knows? I really enjoyed the book and found it easy to read. Loved the personal stories in particular. However after finishing the book I felt a sense of loss and how so much of Wigram is gone forever. But at least we can see and read how it used to be and thankfully some small part of Wigram does still exist.

If it did take part, perhaps the attack could be re-enacted at a future airshow with ZK-TAF - positioned at crowd centre - playing "victim"? ;-)

Yes I agree Ian. It looks like the Air Force Photographic archive supplied a lot of the photos so I might use the handy reference number with those and see some bigger versions.
