Hi all, Haven't finished much modelling-wise for a year or two now what with new job and baby daughter. But finally got some time to finish one up. So here's my latest, the Tamiya gem of the Spit Ia. All Humbrol enamels, weathering is washes and pastels. Markings are for L1043 of 610(F) Sqn RAF at Biggin Hill in July 1940. Cheers, Tim

Hi Tim Very Nice, always good to see a Spitfire!!! Especially 610 Squadron. My first Spitfire model was DW-K always had an affinity for 610 since then One question if you don't mind? What colour Humbrol did you use for the underside (Sky/Duck Egg Blue)? I have a couple of Spits waiting in the wings, and Humbrol are the paints I use Thanks for sharing your build Regards Alan

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the kind words. The underside colour is BSS 381 (1930) No.1 Sky Blue mixed from Humbrol paints to Paul Lucas' formula for the colour. If you would like this mix ratios let me know.
Tim

Nice work Tim, very clean build. The underside colour seems bluer than the normal 'sky'.

Nice work Tim, very clean build. The underside colour seems bluer than the normal 'sky'. Hi Flyjoe, Well spotted, the undersides are bluer than normal Sky Type S because I have painted them BSS 381 (1930) No.1 Sky Blue. When the Air Ministry issued the directive on the 6th June 1940 for Sky undersides on day fighters the problem was that it was an entirely new colour and RAF stores had virtually no stocks of the colour. As a result squadrons it is believed that squadrons used either on squadron mixes or were supplied colours which were a near match for Sky which RAF stores had obtained of similar colours to the correct specification from the paint manufacturers. BSS 381 (1930) No.1 Sky Blue was a colour which was available to the correct specifications and which archaeological evidence suggests might very well have been used. Paul Lucas wrote a very interesting booklet on the subject in 2000 which is well worth hunting down. Cheers, Tim

Very nice job. Hate to point this out but shouldn't the fin flash have the red stripe forward?

Very nice job. Hate to point this out but shouldn't the fin flash have the red stripe forward? Hi Baz, And thank you. You have sharp eyes! Although the fin flash is deliberately painted with the blue section forward as L1043 had hers incorrectly painted in this manner. She actually wasn't unique in this as there were a number of airframes which flew during the Battle of Britain with incorrectly oriented fin flashes. Cheers, Tim

Does a coloured photo of the real aircraft exist?

Does a coloured photo of the real aircraft exist? Unfortunately not. Colour photos of the Battle of Britain are exceedingly rare. The most famous photo of L1043 (DW-O) is in flight with DW-K which shows the incorrect fin flash compared with DW-K

great effort... seems the DW spitfires are quite common then? I have airfix and academy spitfires both with the DWs!
