Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch have McD's and their airfares are always much cheaper than Hamilton's though! IIRC ChCh don't. Going by memory McDs didn't get a concssion in the upgraded terminal so they have built down by where the Brevet Club was. But airport food is horribly expensive and in a way they have a captive customer base. With regard to the prices and how expensive things are in NZ, I would agree. Just look in the supermarket.

Christchurch has Burger King in the terminal itself. McD's has a restaurant with drive through further down the road. I'm actually quite impressed by the food court at Chch airport. I used to stay at the Sudima hotel for work a bit and would often walk up to the airport food court for a quick dinner when I didn't feel like eating alone in the hotel dining room. The Yakatori place did some good meals for reasonable prices. I guess they have the passenger throughput to justify the size of food court. Hamilton is a bit of an air travel backwater as far as regular domestic travel goes. The upstairs food place coffee is ok, but the eatables choices are a bit limited as they have no cooking facilities.

I am sure I saw a pretty large kitchen through the door on the way to the upstairs loos in Hamilton, I thought it was a kitchen anyway?? I recall thinking they must cook on site.

They must have food prep somewhere on site, but they don't have anything much to work with in the actual serving area.

The prices are high at Hamilton Airport, as they are at most other airports around the country. Tauranga has the option of the Classic Flyers cafe down the road, much better than the terminal. New Plymouth is nice to eat at, again a bit pricey, but at least you get salad sides with your cooked meals. Christchurch is light years better than it was before the refurbishment. Lots of variety, and if you have an airport ID you can get discounts at some places. The thing that amazes me is people are prepared to pay huge lumps of money for alcohol beverages in terminals, yet they will complain about over-priced cafe food.

Thats the problem with airport cafes, they have to pay double and sometimes triple rent to the airport company(s) or franchisee/vendors. It doesn't help that the food fare is basic stodge...Still, unless you are transitting, why buy food at the airport? I am amazed that Hamilton airport doesn't have yet another Sushi bar installed. But then there are only ten depart/arrival flights on average each day.

They had a food price 'scandal' like this at the Christchurch Commonwealth Games back in 1974,and there has been many repeat episodes at other events since then. Somehow it still always seems to come as a great surprise. I would have thought that it would be obvious.

The shuttles do operate but the City Council has been bailed up to provide a smaller direct bus service from downtown or divert the Te Awamutu regional bus service. Tricky as pax is pretty low.

Wellington does not have a McD's. The only mainstream fast food there is Subway, downstairs in the baggage hall.

Hmmm, my mistake, I was sure there was one there. Oh well. It's obviously not a decent airport then either.

Replacing McDonalds? Interesting...I'm sure I saw a Maccas when the 'new' terminal opened and I went exploring.(I usually transit in the Koru lounge and harass all the MPs passing through, great fun) The chain fastfoodies really are only going to do well at the three hubs. For the rest, its just a basic cafe. I remember Invercargill having a bar/cafe upstairs as well as the pokey little cafe that's been there forever downstairs. Didn't seem to be used alot, and less so since Q300s are used more than ATRs with the airbridge. International flights into Hamilton will only work if Tiger becomes the re-focus of the LCC airline for the Virgin/AirNZ tie-up. Then grotty Jetstar may show up. Didn't Air Norfolk Islands show up at one stage? IK wouldn't call Hamilton's terminal a folly, but it is rather grandious for what's there now - almost nothing.
