One of my favourite aeroplanes anywhere. Just so elegant and pretty. Thanks for the photos, Shorty!

When I first went to 4TTS at the beginning of 1968 there was an extensive collection of cutaway engines on display. When I returned for my fitters course in 1970 they had all gone, I was told that that someone had donated them to MoTaT. Given their reputation at that stage i was crestfallen as to what would become oh tnem. I saw the Merlin at MoTaT and my fears appeared to be well founded. It was not in good condition and someone had broken off part of the Rolls Royce wording that had been left on the rocker covers, only the rest of the cover had been removed. Among the engines I recall were Cheetah, Pegasus, 1830, 1340,Wasp, Goblin, Derwent, Avon, Gypsy Major, Gypsy Queen and One which came out of a Sikorsky 55. A few of these were motorised, the 1340 and Avon for sure. Here are shots of the Cheetah and the Pegasus (which I think may now be mounted on the Museum's Vildebeeste) Cheetah X Pegasus IIM2 Just for Al, here are two of my Hercules that I had. In a moment of desperation during the last lockdown I took to thumbing through a copy of the Pegasus II.M.2 & II.M.3 Aero-engine Manual (A.P. 1451C) and I was interested to discover some of the differences between these two models. When I cast my freshly educated eye over Shorty’s photo of the cutaway engine, titled Pegasus IIM2, I saw that it was in fact a Pegasus IIM3. The IIM2 is a pusher type (as used in the Walrus) and has reduction gear ratio 0.666:1, which is indicated by a tag on the gear casing and it suits a four bladed propeller, Unlike the tractor version which has an exhaust collector ring, the IIM2 has exhaust stubs on each cylinder. Due to the reversed flow of air over the engine it has a much different air intake and additional cylinder baffles as well. The IIM3 is the more common tractor type and has reduction gear ratio 0.5:1. I don’t recall ever seeing the cutaway at MOTAT but it could have been among the many that were transferred to the RNZAF Museum. My proof that it is a IIM3 is that the two exposed bevel wheels in the reduction housing are of equal size, therefore ratio 0.5:1. I do remember the Pegasus that went from MOTAT with the Vildebeest to Wigram but don’t recall if I ever saw it’s manufacturer’s plate. Here’s Bob Norton and Jim Sullivan inspecting it’s restoration progress back in 1967. Photo credit Auckland Star published date 4/11/67. Auckland_ Star_4Nov1967 by Ron Wilson, on Flickr This engine has been more recently displayed at the Air Force Museum alongside the Vildebeest and with the display board describing it as a IIM3. A while back I heard the suggestion that this one is from a Walrus instead! So could it be a IIM2 or even a Pegasus VI? Looking forward to confirmation on what the correct model number is for both of these engines.

It may have been noticed that this thread has been dormant for a while. No, I haven't run out of photos but have had a traumatic time over the last couple of years. More serious though is that my scanner/printer is no longer working.
I have been using a HP " Photo Smart C 8180 All in One" Printer Scanner which printed, copied, and scanned negatives and slides. These days it keeps telling me about a non-existent paper jam and since adobe acrobat was dropped it keeps telling me about that and refuses to work. I have tried in vain to find somewhere that services HP printers but to no avail. The suggestion is that I throw it away and buy a new one. However, it was top of the line one when I bought it (costing over $1K) so I cant afford that and secondly it is a discontinued model and one that has the functions I need is no longer made.
So the question is - does anyone know where I can get it serviced or is there a different brand that make a printer/scanner with the same functions?

I have a tender document for these engines- #6764 dated 15 Dec 1972. Included were Goblin, Gypsy Queen, Merlin, Cheetah, Pegasus, Twin wasp, Hercules, Derwent and a second Merlin with 2 speed superchager (probably Packard?).I think there was an uproar and most ended up in various museums.

Shorty, looking at the age of this unit, you may struggle to find someone to service this. I assume you are still down south? May pay to ring some of the local service agencies and see if they can help. I use a Canon 9000F for scanning, but as it is over 10 years old, have just moved to an Epson V660 - not cheap! Day-to-day printing, photoscanning, OCR, I use a Canon TR7600 which produces fairly good results, and using inkpost inks, is not too expensive to run.

Have an idea that the CAC clubhouse was moved to Harewood, but somewhat later than that - Harewood opened as a civil aerodrome sometime in 1940 (April I think?), and as an RNZAF Station in October 1940. That building was used for some unknown purpose until later in 1941 when it became a sort of "club house" for the resident WAAFs, and reverted to the CAC in 1946, still in the same place, survived till the new brickbuilding replaced it in 1960s (or early 70s?) Pretty certain that this is covered in Tony Phillips's history of the aerodrome too.
