For all those "Top Gun" afficionados poncing around, take a moment or two to watch REAL pilots flying REAL aircraft, and every single one of them taller than Tom Cruise!

Apparently the director and crew never expected the Spanish pilots to fly in that low! If I remember correctly the Spanish Air Force were supplying the Heinkel 111s and had recently retired most of the aircraft, it was largely Confederate Air Force (Commemorative these days) pilots flying the 109s. www.daveswarbirds.com/bob/frames.htmI think there is more detail in Len Deighton's book about the making of the film - Baz, do you still have your copy of it?

Nope, it is largely Spanish Air Force pilots flying the Buchons, with up to four CAF pilots flying their own aircraft in any given scene. The Spanish Air Force guys were lead by an ace of the Spanish Civil War. The best book is by Leonard Mosley, I have never read Deighton's book.

OK. Well some good behind the scenes footage here:
Actually it might be the Mosley book Baz has/had.

I've got it somewhere. Recall reading how one of the Spitfires was smoking (glycol leak?) and had to return to base and everyone thought it was for the film until the pilot said he didn't have the smoke on! Ooops. I also remember recently reading in Flypast or Aeroplane that Adolf Galland went up in a two seat Buchon during the making of the film and got to fly a "109" again. Apparently it was quite a show when he took over! Should have got Bader or Tuck in one of the Tr9 Spits and had a dogfight!

Is your book the Mosley book, Battle of Britain (a paperback) or is there another book about the making of the film by Deighton? Moseley's book is a great read about the trials and tribulations and politics of getting the film funded and made. A really well covered documentary style look behind the scenes. You soon learn what a prick Galland was on set.

You soon learn what a prick Galland was on set. It seems to have been a trait among some of the more flamboyant pilots on both sides. I have a book by British historian Max Hastings, called Warriors, in which he details the careers of people such as Guy Gibson, an extremely unpopular man by all accounts!

I'm not aware of any "making of" books by Len Deighton, only by Robert Rudhall(sp?) which are hard to find but apparently very good.

Yep thats the one. Love that cover photo! I think I got the book not long after watching the movie (at the pictures). It was a cracking read. They had a lot of issues with the weather too (big surprise for England!!) and to keep the pilots amused they had a competition in a hangar with paper aeroplanes.
