All laid up in harbour due to budget cuts?

Yep....due to the Republicans and Democrats still squabling over balancing the books, the automatic cuts have come into effect, with the US military taking the brunt of the cuts. Apparently, more ships are going to be added to that lot over the next few weeks, and they are even going to wind down an entire US Navy air wing.

It would have been hard to imagine this kind of situation being allowed occur during the height of the Cold War.

With six carriers and all those other ships in port the knocking shops will be doing a roaring trade no doubt!

A 'gold rush'....Probably can't get a seat into Norfolk at the moment as they will be flying in from all over the place as the word gets round... [The only good thing about Pearl Harbour was that there were no carriers lined up -luckily]

It's amazing to see all the different shapes and sizes of carriers there, I had assumed that for some years all their carriers were Nimitz Class.

The smaller, boxy ones are amphibious-warfare ships. The only non-Nimitz aircraft carrier still in commission is USS Enterprise, which is in the process of being deactivated.

A nice juicy target for a North Korean nuke. Daves right about the knock shops. Boozers will be doing a roaring trade as well ;D

Amphibious? I'd love to see one come out of the water.

They are hovercraft on the inside Or rather, some of them have hovercraft on the inside - I'd love to see them in operation. Sent via Proboards Android App

While watching the progress of the Bahia Negra, I had a cruise into Newport News via the google maps & sat picturers. There isn't a vessel in Newport News Dockyard!

I knew they were cutting costs, but is that line up for real? Are they really docked to save money? America's big stick is getting shorter I feel. I found this interesting article about the future of US aircraft carriers: www.cnas.org/node/10190

Amphibious? I'd love to see one come out of the water. Some will be LHDs. LHAs etc. They are called amphibious beause their primary role is amphibious ops. They carry craft with landing capabilities like hovercraft, helos and landing craft etc. Canterbury is classified as an amphibious ship because its main role is amphibious ops. However it is not a good one because of design flaws. But having said that it does the job as something to learn on and from - taking baby steps.
