The first visit by an Airbus MRTT to New Zealand happened just after 13:00 today when A39-002 touched down at Auckland International Airport. May there be many more visits and bring the dependants too! (F-18s) Cheers

The reason I asked is it was posted into the civil board and I wasn't sure what that round thing was. As it's RAAF I have shifted it.

I obviously don't use it enough! ;D MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) is the KC135 replacement? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A330_MRTTCheers

No, not the KC135 replacement. Well it was then, got re rendered and boeing won. It is replacing the retired B707's the RAAF used , plus is replacing the Victors and VC10;s the RAF had

But the RAF aren't having the boom fitted.

yep, they're probe and drogue fans over there. Seems to be an easier, quicker and cheaper fit out rather than a boom, only disclaimer being lower fuel flow.

But the RAF aren't having the boom fitted. Sometimes the RAAF aircraft don't have the boom fitted either - when it detaches in-flight!

Hose and drogue might just transfer airframe complexity/compromise and crew workload issues from a small number of tankers/boom operators to a larger number of recipient aircraft. It can't be that easy to maneuver E-3, A-400M or C-130 sized aircraft so that the huge fixed probe bolted on the front makes and maintains contact with a pretty small drogue basket.

Not to worry - by the time the RAAF get their first squadron of F-35s operational sometime around 2150, Airbus should have the boom-uncommanded-detach issues sorted! ;D In hindsight though, maybe Airbus are developing a new type of boom - one that fires like a harpoon into the receiving aircraft? ;D The real worry about the UAE boom-tish, is that from the article it would seem that the boom wasn't even plugged into another aircraft when it parted company from the tanker? At least the RAAF one gave a Portuguese F-16 pilot a scare!

Looks like they were just testing something different that the RAAF hasn't ordered with theirs. Main thing is no one was hurt.
