Some more pics as A39-002 taxis for take off on 23L for Christchurch. Drop a bit of fuel out the back and start the APU and just maybe it could do a dump and burn like the F-111 could? ;D Cheers

Bugger, if I had read the threads earlier I would Have left home earlier and caught it. So yes finally, last day of my 3 weeks off and I get to have my few hours at the airport. Got quite warm just after lunch and both of us ended up asleep in the fold down seating in the back of the van with side door open with a wee breeze. Still took over 100 shots. will have to go through them tomorrow.

I'd hate to AAR a E-3/ C-17 etc via a probe and drogue. The Boom is certainly better in that application
The RAAF have the Wedgetail, C-130J (?) and C-17 with a AAR recetpacle

According to Flight Global the P8s have the same AAR refueling system developed for the RAAF Wedgetails. Actually not bad article on P8 although written in 2010.

You would think so being very similar in construction

Looks like they were just testing something different that the RAAF hasn't ordered with theirs. Main thing is no one was hurt. Well that is reassuring - they now have two different issues to deal with that cause the booms to depart controlled operation and shear off the aircraft?

Surprised they don't use the local military field Whenuapai? i.e. Not sure how it works but assume they'd pay landing fees at Auckland Int Airport vs free at the RNZAF field . Comparing to KSA very rare to see Military a/c there, they head instead to Richmond. Doesn't seem it was on the ground long enough to be tagged if that was in the back of their minds.

I would surmise it might have something to do with take off weights etc. Safety margins. whats the max weight landing at WP. I am sure they have had C5's in there but they must have landed and left with minimal fuel. Has there ever been a B747 land at WP.

Since it worked ok with the E7, why not keep it tried and true

May have something to do with weights and fuel storage at WPE? The C-17's that I have followed at WPE always come to Auckland to top up there tanks? Auckland has a pipeline to Marsden Point does WPE? Cheers

Also runway length (which feeds into max weight of course).

Not sure if all frames have it, but the area is situated on the upper left side behind the brow windows. All piping and mounting points are in place. It was the good old 'fitted for, not with' option. Sent from my Nexus 7 using proboards

Not all A/C off the line have the receptacle fitted, only the spec ops HC/MC130J variants. Confirmed today that all Aus J's have the AAR provisions, and we never purchased not even one probe kit. Still an option, and would not be that hard to install. Sent from my Nexus 7 using proboards
