Ferrymead Aeronautical Society Inc.'s new website went online this week, and can be viewed here: www.ferrymeadaero.org.nz If anyone spots any errors please let me know. The primary intention is to publicise our collection, and also to encourage punters to visit. As such, we don't intend to provide 'blow by blow' action regarding individual restoration projects (of which there are about 7 active at present) but over time we would like to provide a brief history of each aircraft, along with a few photos from when they were in their prime. If anyone has any pictures, especially of the following aircraft, which we can use I would be very grateful: Vampire NZ5758 Hudson NZ2035 Pawnee ZK-BZK Airtruk ZK-DMX (suspect we have plumbed the well already with this apparently camera shy aeroplane). Hiller 12 ZK-HIK Hughes 300 ZK-HSJ Wessex G-AZBY Finally many thanks to Peter Lewis for providing the bulk of the photos we have to date.

Hmmm, two Mosquitos in part to make one, and there are two engines as well. It will be great to see one complete in the future some time, at least for display!

Very nice lets hope it generates some income/volunteers/etc. Not a mistake but when I visited with other forum members a few years ago there was a Pratt and Whitney R2800 from a Corsair there.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, I am quite pleased with it for a first attempt at such a thing, however I would welcome any constructive criticism you might have. Baz, I think there is a damaged R2800 in the store next to the Packard Merlin (it is some large American radial anyway) but I haven't had a good look. The section regarding engines is not very complete, as we also have a couple of turbines that aren't listed -- I'll get to them anon.

I was flabbergasted when Dennis mentioned it was found in a paddock in Grimseys Road........and thats my road!

That would've given the Auster a good rate of knots if it was in working order Baz ;D

Compressibility may have become a problem... or airframe stretch... or mechanical balance, prop diameter... LOL!

I remember when that R-2800 was recovered about 30 -35 years ago! My recollection is that it was the model used on Venturas ("A" version, 2-speed single blower), and not the Corsair version, which was the "B" model (with main and auxiliary blower). The "C" version was the one used on the postwar DC-6 family, etc. One thing I remember about the Ferrymead engine was that the cylinder cooling fins were very thin steel and could be "strummed" which created a sound not unlike a fine harp being played. Do you publish the annual accounts anywhere?

Peter,
As we are a registered charity we are required to lodge an annual return to the commission and not to the registrar of incorporated societies as of old where we used to lodge our "classic" accounts.
A couple of years ago Charities embraced a new set of standards and we now have to present our data in their format, using of all things, Excel templates they issue, the lodgements of which you can find on charities.govt.nz
Charities are now reviewing this as apparently there has been significant backlash against this move so who knows what the outcome will be! I can't comment publicly on the logic behind the content of the currently required format but at the risk of saying I'm old fashioned I'd prefer to read a classic P&L and balance sheet.

To Deny's comments above I would just add that: 1. Our charities registration can be viewed here; and 2. If it is of interest please look behind the summary of income and expenditure shown on the 'returns' page of the Charities website. The figures shown there are generated by Charities Services and are somewhat misleading IMHO (ie it shows $500,000 of insurance money as income, but doesn't record the expenditure of almost all of this money on the actual repairs). Our filed returns, which are linked on the 'returns' page paint an accurate picture of our finances.

The AGM at which the accounts were accepted by the meeting was only two weeks ago. The accounts are online now. Things are a little bit healthier than last year thanks in no small part to the generosity of members of this forum.
