Actually Bruce I wasn't specifically thinking about Cambridge. In fact Wairarapa seems a far more logical place than Wellington too.

We used to make plenty of components for the Plant Zone-Aramoho and we always referred to the various bits as "Jigger Parts". But then we had names for everything and everyone had a nickname.

The original hand pump carts were the jiggers, weren't they? As seen here in Dad's Army (The Royal Train) as used by the Warden, the Vicar, the Verger and the Mayor. They had one of them on the Cambridge Branch line when I was a kid.
Bill Pertwee got severely bruised by the handle when filming this!

We sat upstairs in the balcony of the old wooden gretta point building (because I was not keen on going anywhere near any masonry) watching the ripples in the harbour as each aftershock hit. The Gretta point building was shifted from around evans bay where the Flying boats docked. It now sits downtown waterfront in a prime spot. We measured the aftershocks by how much our wine was slopping up the side of the glass. Town was a mass exodus all walking home. Wellington quickly became gridlocked the main problem was with the Rail network out. I was quite happy sitting watching the world go by.

I'm so glad I don't work in central Wellington any more...the traffic was bad enough around the Hutt Valley.. Actually Bruce I wasn't specifically thinking about Cambridge. In fact Wairarapa seems a far more logical place than Wellington too. Might not be the best choice, Dave... NZ's largest earthquake, 8.2, was on the Wariarapa fault line...back in 1855... In 1934 we got a 7.6 and in '42 we had a 7.2 and a 7.0.... Hmmm...now why did I move over here??

That was the one which ruptured in 1855 and caused the HUGE Wellington earthquake. That particular fault also caused havoc in Wellington in 1942, as well as levelling a large part of the downtown area of Masterton.

On FRiday night, at about ten to six, there was another house-rattling shake at our place where we just happened to have a family gathering. Daughter-in-law and grandkids largely departed the scene to under the dining-room table while I decided I couldn't join them wihout first removing a grandaughter or three so I decided "what the hell" and stayed on my feet. I noticed shortly after the tremor had stopped that I was still holding my wine-glass and hadn't spilled a drop. That's air force training for you!
