Wow, I'd forgotten that the Baggies had had a fire too. They had the melted clock on the wall when I was there in 1989, still ticking away.

Hi Beags, I remember being told about the barrack fires when I joined but never knew it was an arsonist involved. Do you have more details? Was it two barrack H Blocks that were burnt? I can't recall. I know the 4TTS barracks had a few newly rebuilt wings. I was living in the barracks at the time, our wing only suffered smoke damage but the wing opposite burnt out. It was 1968 as i was on my A/F Mechs course. The sam guy on the same night tried to burn down the WAAF barracks and we were helping put that out when he set fire to our block. For the rest of our course we lived in one of the classrooms at ACS. We were living there when the Inangahua eartquake struck. I have a heap of slides of the aftermath of the fire. The block involved was one of thoseon the town side .

So were there two different lots of arson there, 20 years apart then? 1968 and 1986-7? The one I heard about wasn't long before I arrived in 1989 as the barrack was fairly freshly rebuilt.
