I just heard a lovely deep throaty engine sound with overtones of a higher pitch whine, so I looked out and saw the white Beaver fly right overhead nice and low. What a gorgeous machine that is. Was over Leamington going from the direction of Rukuhia toward the direction of Karapiro.

Nice, I believe she is to be used a *crew trainer* for a crop dusting crowd near Hamilton, so you may hear and see her a bit around your part of the world?! Great that the old girl can still be used in such a role and yes nothing like that sound!
*Now don't quote me second hand news so I may be wrong*

Awesome pics as always Planecrazy! Thanks for sharing. I am reliably informed she is on her way to Pelorus Air, based out of Picton (Koromiko?). They run a trio of Cessna's from memory.

Today had a visit from a very inspirational person, Eric Dabas piloting his Flight Design CTLS (hope I got that correct?) overnighting on Lord Howe Island before flying direct to New Zealand tomorrow, depart 7am local time. Eric flies the CTLS and is supported by the Commanche with two other chaps. Handflight website. handiflight.com/en/Then around 1.30pm local time a Cessna floatplane came direct from Keri Keri, fuel and go to the east coast of Australia, was busy working at the time so only got a couple of distant shots.

The Swiss round-the-worlders took off this morning around 7am local time estimated 8 hours from Lord Howe Island to New Zealand, the little CTLS has a 19 hour endurance if required! Had a great chat with Eric about how he controls the aeroplane, firstly she can have all the hand controls removed and return to a rudder operated by feet in less than two hours. In this picture you can see a large grey lever this operates the rudder forward for left back for right. The small black handled lever on the consul is brakes and the throttle can’t be seen as it is behind his knee. Eric told me cross winds can be tricky as he is swapping his hands from rudder to throttle he tries to land with the throttle at idle. Then taxing sometimes both right and left hands have to move from throttle to rudder to brakes! As I post this according to Flightaware they are around one hour forty minutes from Keri Keri.

Hasn’t been much of interest of late until this old gem showed up, 1970’s Fletcher could almost be called a classic these days? From what I have found built in 1979 serial number 267. Be interested if anyone can share some history on this one, currently in the air between Lord Howe and Norfolk her way home to her place of birth.

I have this scant information, which I hope is correct. Built as an FU-24-954, c/n 267 and registered on 9 July 1979 as ZK-EMP. Cancelled from the New Zealand register on 13 February 1980 and registered in Australia as VH-MYW.

Could she have been originally flown across the ditch by Cliff Tait?

Brad Stubbs was the pilot of this Fletcher in 1968, problem with his visit it was pre a runway existing on the island! The aeroplane had left Norfolk Island heading for the east coast of Australia. He got around a quarter of the way from Lord Howe to the east coast and calculated he wasn’t going to make due to strong headwinds. Only option come back to Lord Howe and ditch into the calm waters of the island’s lagoon or find somewhere to land. Obviously with some skill he got her down, the machine remained on the island for a couple of days, she became the first and only crop-duster to take off from the island’s cricket pitch!

FU-24 ZK-EMP was flown Auckland - Norfolk Island on 27Dec1979 as a new aircraft on delivery to Australia to become VH-MYW. (No record of who flew it, however).
Fu-24 ZK-BIP ex James Aviation arrived safely in Australia and became VH-EQA with Hazair Agricultural Services. Finally crashed Burke's Hole Gorge, Yass River, 31Dec80.

If you zoom you can see the attachments for the ferry-flight HF radio antenna wire. It is strung from the port wingtip to the top of the tail. On smaller aircraft like the Airtourer or CT4, we had to use a retractable trailing aerial to get sufficient length.

In the 1950/60s we used a retractable trailing aerial on the C-180, trailed from the top of the fin, using a plastic kitchen funnel as a drogue. The radio was the American ARC 5 HF set, tucked in behind the hopper, a bit of a change came with the C-185, and transistors, and a box about "small shoe box" size. isc
